Tamodex 20 mg (Tamoxifen Citrate)

Tamodex is a medication in the form of a pill that has been used for decades to treat breast cancer. It is a type of hormone therapy prescribed to treat breast cancer pre-menopausal women and post-menopausal women. Tamodex has been shown to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancers. It does not benefit women whose tumors are hormone receptor-negative or ER-negative. This hormone therapy is used as an adjunct treatment after surgery to help reduce the recurrence of breast cancer. Patients may also receive tamoxifen treatment before surgery. The medicine is usually taken for five years. Tamoxifen works by blocking the estrogen activity in the breast, which has been shown to promote anti-tumor activity.

Uses of Tamodex 20 mg

Tamodex is a prescription treatment for primary breast cancer. Your doctor may prescribe it as an additional treatment following surgery to reduce the risk of breast cancer returning in the same breast or the growth of new cancer cells in either breast or spreading somewhere else in the body. This type of treatment is known as an adjuvant or additional treatment. If you have been prescribed tamoxifen in combination with your primary breast cancer treatment, you will be provided with all the necessary information associated with the use of medication. Sometimes patients may receive Tamodex 20 mg as the first treatment for breast cancer. The condition may apply when surgery is not required or needs to be delayed.

Tamodex may also be given to patients with locally advanced breast cancer. Your doctor may also prescribe your Tamoxifen if you have been diagnosed with secondary breast cancer. Anti-Cancer medicine may be an option when an individual is at high risk of developing breast cancer because of family history.

Mode of Action

It is believed that estrogen hormone is responsible for stimulating the growth of breast cancer cells. A doctor will prescribe Tamoxifen only when breast cancer has receptors within the cells that adhere to estrogen, also known as ER-positive or estrogen receptor breast cancer. Your doctor will test for estrogen receptors using tissue from a biopsy or after surgery. When estrogen is found to adhere to these receptors, it can cause cancer cells to grow and divide. Tamoxifen, the active ingredient Tamodex 20 mg, works by blocking the effects of estrogen on these receptors. This, in turn, stops estrogen from encouraging the growth of breast cancer cells. If estrogen receptors are not present in the breast cancer cells, then it is known as ER-negative or estrogen receptor breast cancer.

Dosing Instructions

Tamodex is available in the form of a tablet. Breast cancer is found to be associated with varied dosing schedules for Tamodex 20 mg. Usually, the recommended dose for most people is 20 mg once daily. The duration of the treatment will vary according to individual circumstances. Tamodex, like any other anticancer medication, has side effects. When compared to chemotherapeutic regimens commonly used for the treatment of breast cancer, Tamoxifen citrate appears to be much safer and tolerable by the patients.
