Yaz Pills (0.02mg/3 mg )( Ethinylestradiol /Drosperinone)

Yaz birth control pill is a combined contraceptive medicine. In addition to preventing contraception and pregnancy, it has benefits in varied disorders of women’s health. The term ‘combined’ infers the dual presence of an estrogen and progestin which are the sex hormones that control fertility and menstruation. The estrogenic ingredient of Yaz is Ethinylestradiol while the progestin contained is Drosperinone.

What is Yaz used for?

Yaz is a combined oral contraceptive medicine, commonly known as a birth control pill. It is used to prevent pregnancy. It contains two female hormones, a synthetic progestin called Drospirenone and a synthetic estrogen called Ethinyl estradiol.

How does Yaz work?

Yaz contains the two active ingredients Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone. Both the drugs work together to protect against pregnancy. The combination drug prevents the release of an egg from an ovary and also cause changes in the cervical and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to reach to the uterus.

 What does Yaz contain?

Yaz tablets contain Ethinylestradiol and Drospirenone as the main active ingredients. Each Yaz pill contains 3mg of Drospirenone and 0.02 mg of Ethinyl estradiol.

What are the side effects of Yaz?

The most common side effects of Yaz are:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Spotting or bleeding between menstrual periods
  • Breast tenderness

These side effects are mild and usually disappear with time.

Some less common side effects may include:

  • Less sexual desire
  • Blotch darkening of the face
  • Acne
  • Bloating or fluid retention
  • High-fat levels in the blood
  • High blood sugar level, especially in women who already have  diabetes mellitus
  • Weight changes
  • Problems tolerating contact lenses
  • Depression

This is not a full list of side effects. Talk to your physician if you notice any side effects that concern you.

What medications interact with Yaz?

If you are currently on a long-term treatment for a severe problem with any of the following drugs, you should consult your physician before taking Yaz:

  • NSAIDS
  • Potassium supplements
  • Heparin
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Aldosterone antagonists
  • ACE inhibitors

Tell your physician about all herbal medicines and products that you take. Some other herbal products and medicines may make this birth control pill less effective, including:

  • Griseofulvin
  • Topiramate
  • Barbiturates
  • St. John’s wort
  • Oxcarbazepine
  • Carbamazepine

  • Rifampin
  • Felbamate
  • Bosentan

Yaz may interact with Lamotrigine, a drug used for epilepsy. This may increase the risk of seizures, so your physician may need to adjust the dose of lamotrigine. Consider another contraceptive measure when you take medicines that may make Yaz pills less effective.

When should Yaz not be used?

Your physician will not give you Yaz if you:

  • Ever had a heart stroke
  • Ever had myocardial infarction
  • Ever had deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or retinal thrombosis
  • Have hypertension that medicine can’t control
  • Have diabetes with eye, nerve, kidney, or blood vessel damage
  • Ever had breast cancer or any carcinoma that is sensitive to female hormones
  • Ever had severe migraine headaches with aura, weakness, numbness, or changes in vision
  • Have severe liver disease
  • Have adrenal or kidney disease

Also, do not take this drug if you:

  • Are or suspect you are pregnant
  • Smoke or are over 35 years old

Yaz may not be a good choice for you if you have ever had jaundice caused by pregnancy.

Tell your physician if you have ever had any of the above conditions.

How should Yaz be taken?

Take one Yaz pill daily at the same time in the order directed on the package. Preferably, take the tablet after the evening meal or at bedtime, with water. It can be taken without regard to meals.

Many women have unexpected spotting or light bleeding, or you may feel sick during the first 1-3 packs of pills. If you have these conditions, do not stop taking the pill. The problem will usually disappear. If it does not go away, call your physician. Missing pills can also cause this problem, even when you make up these missed pills. On the days you take two birth control pills, to compensate the missed ones, you could also feel sick to your stomach.

How long should you take Yaz?

Each pack of Yaz birth control pills contains 28 pills for a complete monthly cycle and should be consumed continuously to ensure effective contraception. Please ask your physician if you have any doubt related to the usage of the medicine.

Missed dose of Yaz

If you miss Yaz pills you could get pregnant. The more pills you miss, the more likely you are to get pregnant. These pills provide effective contraception when consumed correctly and have a failure rate of approximately 1% per year. To prevent pregnancy ensure that you take your birth control pills continuously and correctly.
