Chantix Starter Pack : Smoking Cessation Drug

Champix Starter Pack is a prescription medication for smoking cessation in conjunction with smoking cessation counseling. It is a non-nicotine treatment that has been formulated specifically to help adults stop smoking. Quitting smoking can decrease your chances of developing serious health problems such as cardiovascular problems, lung diseases, or certain types of cancer that are associated with smoking. Champix is an oral medication supplied in the form of tablets. Its regular intake blocks or partially mimic the effects of nicotine in your brain, reducing cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It works for people who have had difficulty quitting in the past. The product is not suggested for use with any other form of smoking cessation such as bupropion and nicotine patches.

How will Chantix Starter Pack help you?

Champix has the active component Varenicline, the most recent anti-smoking pharmaceutical drug to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The active ingredient is a partial nicotine acetylcholine receptor agonist, which adheres to the nicotine receptors less than nicotine. This results in a weaker response if people smoke while taking medicine. Thus, the smoker may experience less satisfaction while smoking a cigarette.

Is Champix for everyone?

Champix should only be offered to smokers as one of the options along with counseling programs to help them stop smoking. It must be prescribed as part of a program of behavioral support and by a health care specialist. It is only prescribed after a full assessment of each individual. An individual should see his/her health care specialist every two weeks during the treatment to discuss progress and collect further requests for anti-smoking treatment. Make sure that there is a constant supply of Champix in the body as missing doses may result in the course having to be started again.

What is the dosage of Champix Starter Pack ?

Champix tablet is a prescription drug that contains 0.5 mg or 1 mg of Varenicline. It should be swallowed whole with water and can be taken before or after consuming food. Take the tablet after food to avoid nausea. If you are feeling very sick while taking the tablet, please ensure that you take it with food.

Patients should set a quit date to stop smoking, the intake of Champix usually start 1 to 2 weeks before this date. It takes two weeks to build up Champix levels in your body. When patients stop smoking, an enough amount of Champix is required to prevent cravings and stop the pleasurable effects of nicotine.

The suggested dose that you need to follow from day 1 is given below:

  • First week

Day 1 to 3: Take one 0.5 mg Champix oral tablet once daily.

Day 4 to 7: Consume one 0.5 tablets two times a day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

  • Second week

Day 8 to 14: Start taking 1 mg tablet twice daily at the same time each day.

Day 15 (end of the treatment): Take 1 mg tablet two times a day.

Your first packet of Champix will cover your first four weeks of treatment.

This dosing schedule may not be suitable for everyone. Consult your health care specialist if you develop side effects such as nausea, sleep problems, or strange dreams. If you experience troublesome side effects that can’t be tolerated, you can talk to your health care specialist, and he/she may decide to reduce your dose temporarily or permanently based on the severity of your side effects to 0.5 mg twice daily.

After 12 weeks, if you have stopped smoking, your health care specialist may suggest another 12 weeks of treatment. This will help you to stop smoking for a long run. For this course, you need to take one 1 mg oral Champix in the morning and one in the evening.

When to take Champix?

Consume Champix oral tablets at the same time daily. This will have the best effect and also help you remember when to take it. It does not matter if you take this before or after consuming food. Some people find it helpful to consume these non-nicotine tablets with food.

How can Champix be taken?

Champix comes as a tablet to take by mouth. Swallow it with a glass full of water. You are not supposed to chew or crush the tablet.  0.5 mg Champix tablet is available in white color while a 1 mg dose comes in blue color. You start with a white tablet and then usually go to the blue tablet.

What happens if you stop taking Champix?

In most cases, an individual who undergone Champix treatment will be a nonsmoker at the end of the course. If he/she stop taking Champix in between the course, there will be no difference compared to when they were taken Champix. In some cases, health care specialists prescribe an additional 12 weeks treatment to reduce the chances of relapse.

Discontinuing the tablet at the end of the course has been associated with an urge to smoke, insomnia, depression, irritability, etc. Dose adjustment may be considered to minimize these unwanted effects.

How long should you take Champix?

Champix is a 12 week or 24-week treatment depending on your health care specialist’s advice and your quitting progress. Quitting smoking can take a little longer in some cases, so don't be discouraged if you are not able to stop smoking by day 14. You need to work hard to reduce your daily smoking and then attempt to quit when you feel ready. Completing the full course of medication will help you stay cigarette-free.

Is Champix safe for people with mental disorders?

Various clinical studies support the use of Champix in the mental health population. Champix has been shown to be equally effective in those with and without a mental problem. However, it is necessary to consider what treatment is more suitable to an individual (who wants to quit smoking) quit attempt based on individual circumstances. Always be prepared to deal with your desires. If you fail to control your urge, try again. Stop yourself from going back to smoking after successfully stopping.

Can Champix be taken with another nicotine substitute at the same time?

No, the regular use of Champix blocks nicotine receptors. Nicotine substitutes like patches, vaporizers, or gum will not work and will have the opposite of the desired effect.
