Sumatriptan is a group of medications that is used to treat migraines. It helps to relieve headaches, pain, and other symptoms of migraines, such as nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light/sound. Prompt treatment of a migraine can help you get back to living your normal daily routine and decrease your need for other pain medications. Sumatriptan belongs to a drug category called ‘triptans’ that is used to treat migraines. It relieves pain instantly by affecting specific nerves in the brain. Sumatriptan does not claim to prevent future migraine attacks or lessen the chances of them.
How to use
Before taking Sumatriptan, it is always advisable to read the instructions and information provided in the Patient Information Leaflet thoroughly. If you are not sure about the dosage, ask your doctor or pharmacist. You can take Sumatriptan 100 tablets by mouth with or without food as directed by your health provider, at the first sign of a migraine. The dosage can be based on your health condition and the way you respond to treatment. If your symptoms are relieved partly only, and your headache comes back, you can take another dose in two hours. But make sure that you don’t take more than 200 milligrams in 24 hours. If you have any heart problems or are at higher risk, your health provider can suggest a heart exam before prescribing Sumatriptan. Your doctor may also suggest you take your first dose of this medication under his supervision so that he can monitor you for serious side effects. Contact your doctor if you experience conditions such as the medication not working as well, you need to take this medication more often, or if you have more frequent headaches.
