Zoldonat 4 mg/vial for injection is employed to treat high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia) that occur with cancer. It reduces the abnormal amount of calcium in the bloodstream, for example, in the presence of a tumour. This is because tumours can accelerate normal bone changes, increasing calcium production from bone. This condition is tumour-induced hyperglycaemia. It is additionally used with cancer therapy to treat bone issues that will occur with myeloma and different kinds of cancer (such as breast, lung) that have spread to the bones.
Zoldonat is injected to prevent or delay skeletal complications; for example, bone fractures, pain in bones requiring surgery or radiotherapy, resulting from the spreading of the cancer to the bones due to different types of tumours.
Zoledronic acid, the active ingredient of Zoldonat, belongs to a class of medicines known as bisphosphonates. The class of drugs strongly binds to bone and slows the rate of bone turnover. Additionally, Zoledronic acid may prevent bone destruction and uncontrolled bone growth related to tumour spread to the bone. The injectable medicine must be prescribed and administered only by healthcare specialists experienced in administering intravenous biphosphates.
You should not be using Zoldonat for injection if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or are allergic to Zoledronic acid, other bisphosphonates, or to any other non-medical ingredients in the injection or have low levels of calcium in your bloodstream. If you have been receiving Zoldonat injection, you should not be receiving another intravenous injection or other bisphosphonates (such as risedronate, alendronate, etidronate, clodronate, and pamidronate) at the same time.
You may undergo an oral examination that includes your mouth and teeth before you begin treatment and while you are receiving Zoledronic acid injection. This may be required as some patients have developed serious adverse effects following dental procedures like tooth extractions while on treatment with this injectable drug; as well, since patients dealing with unhealed open wounds in the mouth, dental infections or periodontal disease (teeth disease that affects the surrounding tissues of the tooth) may be at increased risk of issues with their jaws following a tooth extraction while receiving Zoledronic acid injection. It is recommended to avoid invasive dental procedures during the entire treatment. You must practice good dental hygiene, maintain a regular dental care routine, and have regular dental check-ups while you are being treated with this injectable medicine. One should immediately report any oral symptoms, including loosening of a tooth, swelling, pain, non-healing sores, or discharge (pus), during treatment.
Avoid consuming this drug along with bumetanide, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, gentamycin, tobramycin, amphotericin B, ibuprofen, tacrolimus, and vancomycin. While using this medication, you should not be treated with other bisphosphonates, including other brands of Zoledronic acid, used to prevent or treat bone loss (osteoporosis). Always consult your physician and pharmacist before taking any medicines that are not prescribed, such as herbal tonics, supplements, or other medications. This medication should not be used in children.
Some of the most common side effects related to the consumption of this Zoldonat 4 mg are inflammation, itching, rashes, weight gain, profuse sweating, vertigo, problems in breathing, suffocation, dark urine, increased heart palpitation, cough, cold, nausea, vomiting, puffy face and neck, dizziness, change of vision, dull skin, and paralysis.
Serious side effects associated with the use of Zoldonat injection 4mg include:
- Deterioration in renal function - Zoledronic acid injection is not recommended in patients with severe kidney dysfunction.
- Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a severe bone disease that affects the jaw.
- Low calcium levels in your blood (hypocalcemia).
Consult your healthcare specialist if you experience any side effects from Zoledronic/Zoldonat 4 mg, whether listed here or not.
Zoldonat 4 mg for injection is administered by infusion into a vein and should last no more than about fifteen minutes. The general recommended dose is 4mg. If you have a renal impairment, your healthcare specialist may prescribe you a lower dose depending on the severity of the kidney disease if you are receiving treatment for multiple myeloma or bone metastases of solid tumours. You will receive one injection every three to four weeks. If you have been advised to have a treatment that blocks the growth of cancer cells, Zoledronic injection should be given either before or after this treatment. Your healthcare specialist may advise you to take a 500 mg oral calcium supplement along with a multivitamin containing at least 400 IU of vitamin D daily. If you have a history of high calcium levels in the bloodstream, or develop high calcium levels during treatment with calcium and vitamin D, you may be asked to discontinue calcium and vitamin D supplements by yoru healthcare provider.
Use this medication as prescribed by your doctor. The initial dose of this medication for adults is once every 3 to 4 weeks. Do not stop taking this medicine without the consent of your healthcare specialist, even if your symptoms have subsided.
