Androcur 50mg (Cyproterone Acetate  (also spell as Ciproterone Acetate))

Androcur 50 mg is an antiandrogen medicine containing cyproterone acetate as the active ingredient. In males, androgens support the growth of cancer cells in some types of prostate cancer. By blocking the activities of these hormones, cyproterone slows down the growth of cancer cells. Androcur may also be prescribed with other medicines or following surgical removal of the testicles to treat adverse effects such as sweats or hot flushes and prevent any disease from worsening.

This anti-androgen is also effective in reducing abnormal sex drive in men. Cyproterone acetate shields the prostate from the effects of androgens. Prostate cancer and its metastases are androgen-dependent; cyproterone, therefore, exerts a direct antiandrogenic effect on the tumour and its metastases. These changes are reversible following discontinuation of treatment.

How to use  Androcur 50 mg

Your doctor will prescribe the most suitable dose to treat the ailment. For the treatment of prostate cancer, the usual dose is 50 mg. You may be asked to take Androcur with other medicines or change the dose during the treatment.

For the reduction of abnormal sex drive, generally, the treatment begins with a 50 mg dose twice a day. The dose may be increased or changed according to the patient’s condition.

Precautions and warnings

Do not take Androcur 50 mg if you know hypersensitivity to cyproterone acetate or other medicine ingredients. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include wheezing or breathing problems, shortness of breath, rash/itching/hives, and swelling of lips, tongue, throat, or other body parts. Androcur is not recommended in children/adolescents below 18 and women. Avoid taking this antiandrogen medicine if you have liver disease, a history of jaundice, a previous or existing benign brain tumour, depression, severe diabetes, sickle cell anaemia, and wasting disease. Cyproterone tablets contain lactose. If you have been told by your health care specialist that you have an intolerance to some sugars, discuss it with him before taking cyproterone.

It is recommended that a sperm count needs to be checked to establish fertility before commencing Androcur. It takes up to 3 to 20 months for fertile sperm production to be re-established after treatment discontinuation. Some medicines and cyproterone may interfere with each other.

These include medicines for epilepsy, fungal infections, HIV, mood disorders, cholesterol-lowering medications, and antidiabetic agents.

Side effects

The common side effects of Androcur 50 mg are weight change, tiredness, fatigue, weight change, nausea, breast enlargement in men, osteoporosis, hot flushes, decreased drive, depressed mood, shortness of breath, change in breast size, swelling, tenderness, and gastrointestinal complaints. Do not be alarmed by the list of side effects; you may not get all of them.

What is Cyproterone Acetate and what condition does it treat?

Cyproterone Acetate (also spelled Ciproterone Acetate) is an anti-androgen medication marketed under the brand name Androcur 50mg. This hormone therapy works by blocking the effects of male sex hormones called androgens. It treats conditions like prostate cancer in men, severe hypersexuality, and can help manage hirsutism (excessive hair growth) in women. The medicine is also prescribed for severe acne and certain cases of sexual deviation. As an antiandrogen agent, Cyproterone Acetate reduces testosterone activity throughout the body, making it valuable for hormone-sensitive conditions requiring androgen suppression therapy.

How does Cyproterone Acetate work in the body?

Cyproterone Acetate (Ciproterone Acetate) functions as a steroidal antiandrogen by competing with natural testosterone and dihydrotestosterone at androgen receptor sites. Androcur 50mg prevents these male hormones from binding to their target cells, effectively blocking their masculinizing effects. Additionally, this anti-androgen medication suppresses gonadotropin release from the pituitary gland, which further reduces testosterone production in the testes. The dual mechanism makes Cyproterone particularly effective for hormone-dependent conditions. By lowering androgen activity, this hormonal therapy helps control symptoms related to excess male hormone levels, whether treating prostate tumours or managing androgen-driven skin conditions.

How long does Androcur 50mg take to work?

Androcur 50mg typically begins suppressing androgen activity within several days, though noticeable clinical improvements vary by condition. For prostate cancer treatment, testosterone levels usually drop significantly within two to three weeks of starting Cyproterone Acetate therapy. When managing hirsutism or severe acne, visible results often take three to six months as hair growth cycles adjust and skin gradually improves. Sexual drive reduction in hypersexuality cases may occur within the first few weeks. The antiandrogen effect builds progressively, so patience is important. Individual response times differ based on dosage, underlying condition severity, and personal metabolism of this hormone-blocking medication.

When and how should I take Androcur 50mg?

Androcur 50mg tablets should be taken orally with liquid after meals to improve absorption and reduce stomach upset. The typical dosage schedule involves taking the tablets at consistent times daily, usually split into two doses throughout the day. For most conditions, Cyproterone Acetate is taken continuously, though some protocols involve cyclical dosing. Swallow the antiandrogen tablets whole without crushing or chewing. Your healthcare provider will prescribe a specific regimen tailored to your condition—whether prostate cancer, hirsutism, or other androgen-related disorders. Maintain regular medical monitoring including liver function tests during treatment, as this hormonal medication requires ongoing supervision for safety.

Is Androcur 50mg safe for long-term use?

Androcur 50mg can be used long-term for chronic conditions like prostate cancer, but extended Cyproterone Acetate therapy requires careful medical supervision. Prolonged use carries risks including liver toxicity, which necessitates regular liver function monitoring through blood tests. Long-term antiandrogen treatment may also increase risks of meningioma (a usually benign brain tumour), particularly at higher cumulative doses. Bone density can decrease with extended use due to reduced testosterone levels. Despite these considerations, many patients safely use this anti-androgen medication for years when benefits outweigh risks and proper monitoring occurs. Your doctor will regularly assess whether continued hormonal therapy remains appropriate for your specific situation.

Can I take Androcur 50mg with other medicines?

Androcur 50mg can interact with various medications, making disclosure of all drugs essential before starting Cyproterone Acetate. This antiandrogen may enhance effects of diabetes medications, potentially causing low blood sugar. Combining it with other hepatotoxic drugs increases liver stress risks. Medications metabolized through certain liver enzymes may interact with this hormonal therapy, altering effectiveness or side effect profiles. Herbal supplements like St. John's Wort can reduce Androcur efficacy. Statins taken alongside Cyproterone may increase muscle-related side effects. Alcohol should be limited as both affect liver function. Always inform healthcare providers about prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and supplements when using this anti-androgen treatment.

How does Androcur 50mg compare to similar medicines in its class?

Androcur 50mg stands out among antiandrogen medications due to its dual mechanism—both blocking androgen receptors and suppressing testosterone production. Compared to non-steroidal antiandrogens like bicalutamide or flutamide used in prostate cancer, Cyproterone Acetate offers more complete hormone suppression but carries distinct side effect profiles, particularly regarding liver monitoring requirements. For treating hirsutism, this hormonal therapy often proves more potent than spironolactone, another anti-androgen option. However, Androcur typically involves stricter safety monitoring, especially for meningioma risk with long-term use. The choice between antiandrogen agents depends on specific medical conditions, patient tolerance, and required androgen suppression depth.

Is generic Cyproterone Acetate as effective as branded Androcur?

Generic Cyproterone Acetate (Ciproterone Acetate) delivers the same therapeutic effectiveness as branded Androcur 50mg. Both contain identical active ingredients at equivalent strengths and must meet stringent regulatory standards for bioavailability, meaning the body absorbs and utilizes them similarly. Generic antiandrogen versions undergo rigorous testing to demonstrate pharmaceutical equivalence to the original brand. The hormone-blocking action, treatment outcomes for prostate cancer, hirsutism management, and side effect profiles remain consistent between generic and branded formulations. The primary difference lies in cost—generic Cyproterone typically offers significant savings while maintaining the same clinical benefits. Regulatory agencies worldwide approve generic anti-androgen medications only after confirming therapeutic interchangeability with brand-name versions.

What are the common side effects of Cyproterone Acetate?

Cyproterone Acetate (Ciproterone Acetate) commonly causes fatigue, weight gain, and reduced libido due to its antiandrogen effects on hormone levels. Many patients experience mood changes including depression or emotional fluctuations while taking this hormonal medication. Gynecomastia (breast development in men) occurs frequently as testosterone suppression continues. Liver enzyme elevations represent another common concern requiring regular monitoring during anti-androgen therapy. Some individuals report gastrointestinal discomfort, particularly when starting treatment. Hot flashes similar to menopause symptoms may develop as androgen levels drop. Reduced body hair growth, while therapeutically desired for hirsutism, reflects the medication's hormone-blocking action. These side effects vary in intensity among individuals using this steroidal antiandrogen for conditions like prostate cancer or excessive androgen activity.

Who should avoid taking Cyproterone Acetate?

Cyproterone Acetate (Ciproterone Acetate) is contraindicated for individuals with severe liver disease, as this antiandrogen medication undergoes hepatic metabolism and can worsen liver dysfunction. People with history of meningioma should not use this hormonal therapy due to increased tumour growth risk. Those with current or previous blood clots, including deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism, should avoid this anti-androgen treatment as it may elevate clotting risks. Individuals with severe depression or chronic mood disorders require careful evaluation before starting Cyproterone therapy. Pregnant women must never take this hormone-blocking medication due to potential fetal harm. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes, severe anaemia, or hypersensitivity to the active ingredient should not use this steroidal antiandrogen without thorough medical assessment.
