Augmentin Dry Syrup (Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid)
Augmentin Dry Syrup 30ml is an antibiotic drug that belongs to a group of medicines called penicillins. Such medicines kill bacteria that cause infection. Augmentin should be taken under a doctor’s prescription only. This antibiotic is used for the short-term treatment of infections in different parts of the body caused by bacteria. It does not work against viral infections such as colds and flu.
What does Augmentin Syrup contain?
Augmentin Syrup suspension contains amoxicillin (as amoxicillin trihydrate) and clavulanic acid (as potassium clavulanate). Other ingredients of this medicine are orange dry flavor, xanthan gum, aspartame, succinic acid, colloidal silicon dioxide, orange dry flavor 2, raspberry dry flavor NN07943, golden syrup dry flavor 52927/AP, hypromellose, silicon dioxide. This syrup does not have lactose, sucrose, gluten or tartrazine.
How does Augmentin syrup work?
Augmentin Suspension has two medicines: Amoxycillin and Clavulanic Acid. Amoxycillin is an antibiotic that prevents the formation of the bacterial cover, reducing the survival of bacteria. Clavulanic acid works as a beta-lactamase inhibitor that strengthens the capacity of Amoxycillin to resist the spread of bacterial infection.
How to use Augmentin Syrup:
The frequency, dose, and duration of this syrup should be as per advised by your doctor. This is an oral medicine so that you can take it by mouth. Augmentin DDS Suspension can be taken with food as it will help you avoid stomach upset. Shake the syrup well before each dose, and then make sure you measure the dose accurately.

What is Augmentin Dry Syrup used for?
Augmentin Dry Syrup is a liquid antibiotic containing amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, specially formulated for children who cannot swallow tablets. It is used to treat bacterial infections in children including ear infections (otitis media), throat infections (tonsillitis, pharyngitis), chest infections (bronchitis, pneumonia), sinus infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. The clavulanate component protects the amoxicillin from being destroyed by resistant bacteria, making the combination effective against a wider range of infections.
At what age can children start taking Augmentin Dry Syrup?
Augmentin Dry Syrup can be used in children from 3 months of age, though the dose must be carefully calculated based on the child's body weight. For very young infants (under 3 months), it is generally avoided unless specifically directed by a doctor, as their kidneys are not yet fully developed. Always follow your doctor's dosing instructions precisely — never estimate the dose without proper guidance. Children who can swallow tablets may be switched to tablet form as they get older.
How do I prepare and store Augmentin Dry Syrup?
To prepare the syrup, add the required amount of cooled boiled water (as marked on the bottle or indicated in the instructions) to the dry powder, then shake well until dissolved. The prepared liquid must be stored in a refrigerator (between 2°C and 8°C) and used within 7 days — discard any unused portion after this time. Do not freeze. Always shake the bottle well before each dose to make sure the medicine is evenly mixed, as it can settle to the bottom between uses.
How is the dose of Augmentin Dry Syrup calculated for children?
The dose is based on the child's body weight, not their age. Your doctor will calculate the appropriate dose in milligrams per kilogram of body weight (mg/kg/day), and then tell you how many millilitres (ml) of the prepared syrup to give at each dose. The syrup comes with a measuring syringe or spoon — always use this rather than a household teaspoon, which is not accurate enough. Giving the correct dose at the right times is essential for the antibiotic to work properly.
Should Augmentin Dry Syrup be given with food?
Yes — it is best to give Augmentin Dry Syrup at the beginning of a feed or meal. Food helps protect the stomach from the most common side effects of clavulanate, particularly nausea and diarrhoea. For very young children or babies still on milk feeds, giving the syrup just before or during a feed works well. If your child vomits within 30 minutes of taking a dose, consult your doctor or pharmacist about whether the dose needs to be repeated.
What should I do if my child misses a dose of Augmentin Dry Syrup?
Give the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time of the next scheduled dose, skip the missed one and carry on with the normal schedule. Never give a double dose to catch up, as this can cause increased side effects — particularly stomach upset and diarrhoea. To help remember doses consistently, link the antibiotic times to daily routines such as breakfast and dinner. A simple phone alarm can also be very helpful for keeping to schedule.
How does Augmentin Dry Syrup compare to plain amoxicillin syrup?
Plain amoxicillin syrup cannot fight bacteria that produce beta-lactamase — an enzyme that breaks down and inactivates amoxicillin. Augmentin Dry Syrup adds clavulanate, which blocks this enzyme and protects the amoxicillin, allowing it to work against a broader range of bacteria — including many that have become resistant to plain amoxicillin. Your doctor will prescribe Augmentin rather than plain amoxicillin when the infection is known or suspected to be caused by these more resistant bacteria.
Is Augmentin Dry Syrup safe for children with a penicillin allergy?
No — Augmentin Dry Syrup is a penicillin-based antibiotic and must not be given to any child with a known allergy to penicillin, amoxicillin, or clavulanate. Signs of a previous allergic reaction include rash, hives, swelling, or breathing difficulty after taking a penicillin antibiotic. If your child has any antibiotic allergy, always tell the prescribing doctor before any medication is prescribed. Your doctor will choose an appropriate alternative antibiotic that is safe for your child.
Can Augmentin Dry Syrup cause diarrhoea in children, and how should it be managed?
Yes — diarrhoea is one of the most common side effects of Augmentin in children, largely because the clavulanate component affects the gut. Giving each dose with food significantly reduces this. If your child develops mild diarrhoea, keep them well hydrated with water or an oral rehydration solution. Do not stop the antibiotic course without speaking to your doctor first. If the diarrhoea is severe, contains blood, or persists for more than 24–48 hours, contact your doctor promptly for advice.
Why does the Augmentin Dry Syrup need to be used within 7 days of preparation?
Once water is added to the dry powder, the active ingredients begin to break down over time, even when stored in the fridge. After 7 days, the concentration of amoxicillin and clavulanate in the liquid may drop below the level needed to effectively fight the infection — meaning the medicine may no longer work properly. Always note the preparation date on the bottle and discard any remaining liquid after 7 days. If your doctor has prescribed a course longer than 7 days, a new bottle will need to be prepared.
What are the common side effects of amoxicillin-clavulanate in children?
The most common side effects in children are digestive — loose stools, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps. A skin rash can occur in children who are sensitive to penicillin-type antibiotics, and the rash is more common in children with underlying viral infections like glandular fever. Nappy rash or oral thrush (white patches in the mouth) can develop because antibiotics disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the body. These effects are usually mild and settle once the course is complete.
What side effects of amoxicillin-clavulanate in children need urgent attention?
Seek immediate medical attention if your child develops any signs of a serious allergic reaction: a sudden widespread rash or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, difficulty breathing, wheezing, or if the child becomes pale and floppy. Severe or bloody diarrhoea may indicate a serious bowel infection and needs prompt medical review. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), very dark urine, or persistent vomiting are also warning signs that require urgent evaluation. Do not hesitate to call emergency services if your child appears very unwell.
