Azee 500 mg is prescribed to treat infections in different body parts caused by bacteria. The active ingredient of the medicine is Azithromycin, which belongs to the group of medicines called antibiotics. Antibiotics are designed to kill or stop the growth of bacteria responsible for developing an infection. They are not effective against viral infections such as colds or flu.
Azee is effective in treating the following infections when caused by microorganisms sensitive to Azithromycin:
- Acute bacterial otitis media
- Acute bacterial sinusitis
- Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
- Pharyngitis, tonsilitis
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Mild or moderately severe community-acquired pneumonia
- Uncomplicated urethritis and cervicitis
Following a doctor’s prescription on the appropriate usage of antibacterial medicine is important.
Avoid changing the dosing regimen without your healthcare provider’s approval. Also, do not take an Azithromycin formulation to treat other medical conditions.
Do not discontinue treatment if your symptoms improve or you feel better. Stopping the treatment too early may cause your infection to return as the bacteria are not fully eliminated from the body. Please check with your healthcare provider if you have any doubts about how long you should be taking this antibacterial medicine.
Azee tablets are contraindicated in case you have an allergy to Azithromycin, to any other ingredients in the medicine, or any other macrolide or ketolide antibiotics (such as erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, or roxithromycin. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include:
- Rash, itching, or hives on the skin
- Wheezing or breathing difficulties
- Swelling of the face/lips/tongue or other parts of the body
Tell your healthcare provider if you have any liver problems, kidney disease, cystic fibrosis, heart problems (abnormalities of the rhythm), muscle weakness, low levels of potassium or magnesium in your bloodstream, diabetes, and glucose-galactose malabsorption.
Let your healthcare provider know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you have kidney disease, liver disorder, heart failure, heart rhythm problems, or muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis).
You should seek medical attention if anyone in your family has heart rhythm problems. This antibacterial medicine can cause liver-associated problems, serious skin reactions (generalized rash), heart rhythm problems, stomach blockage in babies, and an increased risk of serious heart or blood vessel problems.
Azithromycin may cause diarrhea: Seek medical help if diarrhea becomes severe, does not stop, or blood appears. One should not take medicine to stop diarrhea until you have spoken with your healthcare professional. Diarrhea can occur two months or more after treatment discontinuation. You should seek immediate medical help if the symptoms do not improve or if they get worse.
Medicines that may influence the effect of Azee include magnesium and aluminum-containing antacids and medicines. If you need to take these medicines, your healthcare provider has advised that they should be taken an hour before or two hours after the Azithromycin formulation.
Certain medications can affect how Azithromycin. Ask your healthcare provider before using any other medicine, including prescription medicines or over-the-counter products (including vitamins/minerals and herbal products). Let your healthcare provider know of the following:
- Blood thinner (including warfarin)
- Colchicine, digoxin, phenytoin, cyclosporine, nelfinavir
- Medicines used for heart rhythm problems such as amiodarone, procainamide, sotalol, quinidine, and dofetilide)
Generally, Azee 500mg is well-tolerated. Higher doses may cause nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting. If you develop any of these side effects and they are troublesome, please speak to your healthcare professional. They may suggest ways of managing these side effects.
Rarely, a patient using Azithromycin may experience temporary hearing disruptions (e.g., a feeling of fullness in the ears, ringing in the ears, or decreased hearing). Seek immediate medical help if any of these side effects occur.
Rarely do your liver enzymes increase, which could be an indication of liver damage. You have been prescribed Azithromycin tablets for a long period; your healthcare provider will conduct blood check-ups to identify any changes in your liver enzyme.
The medicine should always be used under the supervision of a healthcare professional. The dose depends on the type of infection and will vary from person to person. Azee tablets can be taken with or without food. You should swallow the pill whole with a glass full of water. If you have been prescribed an antacid, you may take it at least two hours before or two hours after taking Azee. This trick is extremely helpful in avoiding any possible effect of the antacid when administering Azee.
Length and duration of the treatment with Azithromycin: The treatment length may vary from patient to patient. It is always advised to continue taking the medicine until the entire prescription is finished. If you fail to complete the treatment course, the chances are higher that the bacterial infection will not clear completely, and the symptoms will reoccur.
