Calaptin 40 mg is indicated for the management of mild to moderate cases of hypertension (high blood pressure) and renal hypertension, used as monotherapy or in combination with other antihypertensive treatments. Control of high blood pressure should include comprehensive cardiovascular risk management, including, as appropriate, diabetes management, lipid control, smoking cessation, antithrombotic therapy, limited sodium intake, and exercise. In some cases, more than one medicine is required to achieve a normal blood pressure range. Calaptin is also prescribed for the management and prevention of anginal pectoris. Calaptin may also be given along with digitalis to control ventricular rate at rest and at times of stressful conditions in patients with chronic atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation.
Working of the drug:
Calaptin 40 mg contains Verapamil as the main active ingredient. It works to relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. This ultimately reduces the heart's workload.
Things to keep in mind while taking Verapamil tablet include:
- Calaptin 40 mg is contraindicated in cases such as severe left ventricular dysfunction, hypotension, sick sinus syndrome, second- or third-degree AV block, patients with atrial flutter or atrial fibrillation, and in patients with known hypersensitivity to Verapamil hydrochloride.
- Alcohol consumption should be avoided while receiving this medication, as it may worsen the side effects.
- The safety and effectiveness of this medicine in children below the age of 18 years have not been established.
- The medicine should be administered cautiously to patients with impaired liver and kidney function.
- Certain drugs can interact with Calaptin. These include medications such as Ivabradine, digitalis, antihypertensive agents, beta-blockers, antiarrhythmic agents (Flecainide, quinidine, disopyramide), other medications (cimetidine, nitrates, carbamazepine, lithium, phenobarbital, rifampicin, theophylline, cyclosporin, clonidine, telithromycin, inhalation anaesthetics, neuromuscular blocking agents and clonidine.
- Because there is no adequate research data available to evaluate the use of Verapamil in pregnant women, the medication should not be given during the first trimester of pregnancy unless it is clinically required for the welfare of the patient.
- The medication is excreted in breast milk. Because of the associated side effects, breastfeeding may be discontinued while taking Verapamil under the healthcare professional's supervision.
Side effects of Calaptin 40 mg
The reported side effects of Verapamil include:
- Cardiovascular effects: bradycardia(slow heart rate) and severe bradycardia.
- Central nervous system (CNS) effects: headache, dizziness.
- Gastrointestinal effects: abdominal discomfort
- In rare cases of hypersensitivity, bronchospasm accompanied by itch and urticaria has been reported.
- Sleepiness, emotional depression, rotatory nystagmus, muscle fatigue, vertigo, or diaphoresis may also occur with the use of Verapamil.
- If any of these side effects become troublesome or persist for a longer duration, don't hesitate to get in touch with your healthcare professional. You may be advised on either ways to manage the condition or an alternative medicine to use instead of Calaptin (in case of severe side effects). They can provide appropriate guidance on how to address these unwanted effects while using Verapamil.
Generally, the dose of Calaptin 40mg should be based on the patient's condition, and the medicine should usually be used with food. Keep taking this medicine even if you feel well. Because of sudden discontinuation, your condition may worsen.
For the elderly, the dose is not recommended unless liver or kidney functions are checked. Usually, a low dose is suggested for such patients.
