Calaptin 80 mg is used for the treatment of patients with hypertension (high blood pressure), angina (heart-related chest pain), and some types of irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).
- In the treatment of hypertension: Calaptin relaxes the blood vessels, allowing more blood to circulate easily around your body. This lowers your blood pressure and significantly reduces the risk of having a heart attack, stroke, or kidney problems in the future. You do not feel any direct beneficial effects from taking this antihypertensive agent, but it works in the long term to keep you well.
- In treatment of arrhythmia: In case of abnormal heart rhythms, Calaptin works by stopping an abnormal rhythm while it is happening or preventing its occurrence.
- Calaptin helps treat angina (heart-related chest pain): This medication is effective in treating and preventing heart-related chest pain. It causes relaxation and widening of blood vessels in the heart. This allows more blood to flow to the heart, so it receives more oxygen. This medicine enhances your ability to exercise and makes it easy for you to go with your daily life routine. It should be taken regularly to be effective.
Working of the drug:
The active ingredient of the medicine is Verapamil, which functions by relaxing blood vessels to reduce blood pressure. This action helps to reduce the workload of the heart.
Calaptin 80 mg extended-release tablet is contraindicated in certain conditions/situations. These include severe ventricular dysfunction, hypotension, sick sinus syndrome, second- or third-degree AV block, and atrial flutter or fibrillation. Also, the medicine should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to Verapamil or any other ingredients.
Since the medication is highly metabolized in the liver, it should be used carefully in patients with impaired liver function. Calaptin's dosage may need to be reduced when used in patients with attenuated neuromuscular transmission.
The medication should be used cautiously in patients with insufficient kidney function.
Drug interactions may occur:
- Coadministration of Verapamil and Ivabradine should be avoided.
- For hypertensive patients, the risks associated with combined treatment may outweigh the benefits. Note that the combination of Verapamil and other blood pressure medicines should only be used with caution and should require close monitoring.
- Calaptin, when used concomitantly with oral antihypertensive medicines such as angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, beta-blockers, and diuretics, will usually induce an addictive effect on lowering blood pressure levels. Patients getting these combination medicines should be monitored closely. Concomitant use of medications may result in a significant drop in blood pressure that is excessive in some patients.
- Coadministration with Flecainide may result in unwanted effects; hence, it should be avoided.
- The combined use of Quinidine and Verapamil may result in significant hypotension.
- Also, let your healthcare provider know of some other medications before you take Calaptin. These include cyclosporin, lithium, nitrates, cimetidine, rifampin, theophylline, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, clonidine, telithromycin, neuromuscular blocking agents, etc.
Because there are no adequate research studies on pregnant women, this medication should only be used during pregnancy when clearly required. The medication is excreted in breast milk. Because of the risk of developing side effects in nursing infants from Calaptin, nursing should be discontinued while the medication is used.
The safety and effectiveness of this medicine in paediatric patients below the age of 18 years have not been established. Alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication as it may cause worsening side effects.
Serious side effects are uncommon when Calaptin 80 mg is started. However, it is important to seek medical help if you get any side effect that bothers you or persists for a longer duration.
The most common side effects of the medicine include dizziness, edema, headache, hypotension, constipation, and nausea. These are usually mild and resolve within a short period. Talk to your healthcare professional when these don't go away.
