Danogen 200 mg is a prescription medicine for treating endometriosis (when tissues similar to the lining of the uterus grow outside the uterus) symptoms. It may be used either in conjunction with surgery or as sole hormonal treatment in patients not responding to other treatments. The medicine is effective in treating benign fibrocystic breast disease (painful breast disease) or various menstrual problems (painful or irregular periods, premenstrual tension (PMT).

The working of the drug:

Danogen 200 mg contains the active ingredient Danazol, which works by suppressing the activity of the ovaries. Thus, it reduces the amount of estrogen in the body and causes temporary menopause. Thereby shrinking the tissue outside the uterus or stopping its growth. Cancer of the breast should be excluded before commencing treatment. The treatment course should be limited to a maximum of three to six months.

Danogen should not be used in patients presenting with the following conditions:

  • Genital neoplasia
  • Undiagnosed abnormal genital bleeding
  • Impaired kidney, liver and heart disease
  • Androgen-dependent tumour
  • Porphyria (a group of rarely developed inherited diseases that occur due to the buildup of certain substances in the body.
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Known allergy to Danazol or any other ingredients in the medicine.
  • Thromboembolic disease (conditions where blood clots break free and travel through the bloodstream, affecting blood vessels and causing potential damage.
  • Concomitant use with simvastatin

Danazol can cause harm to an unborn child when used by pregnant women. The use of this medication to treat endometriosis may increase the possibility of ovarian cancer or may induce tumours of the liver.

Because Danazol may cause fluid retention, conditions that might be affected by this factor, such as migraine, epilepsy, cardiac or renal dysfunction, require careful observation. Use this medication with caution in patients with diabetes. The medicine has been reported to cause worsening of the symptoms of acute intermittent porphyria.

Certain medications may interact with Danogen and cause unwanted effects. These include warfarin, carbamazepine, antidiabetic medicines, tacrolimus, cyclosporin, Vitamin D supplements, simvastatin, lovastatin, and atorvastatin.

There is not enough evidence to demonstrate the effectiveness of Danazol in patients aged 65 years to identify the safety and effectiveness of the medicine.
