Donetaz SR is useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease, a progressive brain disease which causes problems like memory loss and trouble thinking. It should be given to patients with moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. The medicine contains the active ingredient Donepezil, which is extremely effective in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer's disease and dementia in Parkinson’s disease. It does not cure Alzheimer’s but helps patients with brain function and daily activities.

Uses of Donetaz SR

Donetaz SR 23 mg is used for the treatment of brain disorder that affects an individual’s ability to remember, communicate, thinking power, and performance of daily activities. It treats brain diseases cause changes in mood and personality in people with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mode of Action

Problems such as memory loss and trouble thinking develop due to disturbances of the signal transmission in the brain. Each Donetaz sustainable release tablet contains Donepezil belongs to a group of drugs known as a cholinesterase inhibitor. These drugs work by increasing the level of acetylcholine, which is a chemical messenger involved in the transmission of nerve signals. This helps in improving memory and thinking power.

Dosing Information

Donetaz SR comes in the form of a sustained release tablet to be taken by mouth. It is usually taken regardless of food, preferably in the evening first before bedtime. Your physician may initially prescribe you a lower dose to decrease the risk of side effects and gradually increase your dose after some time. Use this medicine regularly to get the most benefit from it. Consider taking Donepezil with food to avoid an upset stomach.

Possible Side Effects

The side effects of Donetaz SR include gastrointestinal disturbance, diarrhea, muscle cramping, difficulty sleeping, and muscle cramping.  The medicine is not recommended for pregnant women unless it is necessary. The risk and benefits of taking Donetaz sustained release tablet should be discussed with a physician before deciding to take it.

Donepezil is known to increase the gastric acid secretion which may give rise to the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Immediately inform your physician if you experience burning stomach or blood in stools.

Drug Interactions

Inform your physician if you are taking any other medicine, especially the following ones:

• Painkillers such as ibuprofen or aspirin
• Medicines to treat mood disorders such as fluoxetine
• Antifungal drugs such as ketoconazole
• Quinidine, a heart medicine
• Medications to treat tuberculosis such as Rifampicin
• Epilepsy medicines such as carbamazepine or phenytoin
• Medication to treat dementia
• Herbal medicines such as St. Johns wort and ginkgo biloba
