Estradiol and Desogestrel are the active ingredients present in Femilon. Each tablet delivers 0.02 mg of Estradiol and 0.150 mg of Desogestrel.
This medicine is mainly used as a contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy. Estradiol and Desogestrel are the most potent forms of female sex hormones, estrogen (a group of hormones which is essential for the development of the female reproductive system and sex characteristics).
The pill works by preventing the process of releasing the female egg from the ovaries, also known as ovulation. It also causes changes in the uterine and cervical lining, thereby making the cervical mucus more viscous. Due to this, it becomes harder for the male sperm to reach the uterus. The fertilized egg also does not get attached to the uterus wall.
Precautions Femilon (0.02+0.15)mg Estradiol and Desogestrel
There are some drugs which, when they interact with Femilon pills, reduce their effectiveness. Such drugs are bosentan, drugs used for treating HIV, hepatitis C, Phenobarbital or other barbiturates, or seizure medications. If you are using tizanidine, dantrolene, or tranexamic acid, please inform your doctor. It is best to inform your doctor about your medical history, current medications, and any allergies to medicines, so that potential drug interactions can be avoided.
If you are pregnant or planning to be one, or a breastfeeding mother, Femilon is not for you.

How to use Femilon (0.02+0.15)mg : Estradiol and Desogestrel combination pill
Your doctor will determine the right dosage after thoroughly examining you. The dosing instructions provided by your doctor must be followed carefully for optimal results. The first pill should be started on the first day of your period or the following Sunday, and the rest of the dose should be continued as instructed by your doctor. During the initial days, you may need to use alternative birth control measures such as a condom or spermicide to avoid unwanted pregnancy.
Any deviation from the prescribed dosage can render the medication ineffective. It can also cause an unwanted pregnancy. Take the medicine with water at the same time every day to prevent missing a dose. In case of overdose of pills, you may face symptoms like vomiting, nausea and vaginal bleeding. If you get serious overdose effects, then you should consult a doctor immediately.
You must inform your doctor in case you are suffering from uncontrolled high blood pressure, heart disease, blood clotting disorder, problems in the eyes, problems with circulation, unexplained vaginal bleeding, migraine, liver disease, problems in the kidneys, heart attack, etc. It is to be ensured that you do not go 24 hours without the pill. Get a refill pack even before the current one runs out, so you don't miss a single dose.
Those using the pill may get breakthrough bleeding during the initial three months of starting the medicine. If the problem persists or worsens, consult your doctor. If you are scheduled for a medical test, surgery, or advised to rest in bed, you may need to stop taking your medicine temporarily.
Missed dose of Femilon
Missing a pill can be dangerous as it may result in pregnancy. If you miss a pill, take two on the day you remember and then take one pill for the rest of the pack on subsequent days. In the first and second weeks, if you miss two pills consecutively, then you need to take two pills for two consecutive days. This is to be followed by one pill for the rest of the pack.
If you miss two active pills consecutively in the third week, then you should stop using the left over pills and start a new pack the same day if you have started it on Day 1 of your period and if you have started on Sunday then you need to continue with the pill till Sunday and then start with a new pack and discard the old pack.
Store the medicine in a dry and cool place. It should be kept away from light, heat, moisture, and pets, as well as children.
