Losacar 25 mg is a prescription medicine indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart failure. Reducing blood pressure levels prevents future heart attacks and strokes. This medication is also useful in preserving kidney function in patients with diabetes. The active ingredient of the medicine is Losartan potassium, which blocks the activity of certain substances in the body that cause tightening of blood vessels. Losartan helps relax and widens blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure levels and making it easier for the heart to pump blood around the body.

  • Hypertension: Losacar treats hypertension to lower blood pressure. Controlling blood pressure levels reduces the risk of mild to life-threatening cardiovascular events, primarily myocardial infarction. Control of blood pressure should be a part of cardiovascular risk management, including, as appropriate, diabetes management, lipid control, limited sodium intake, smoking cessation, and antithrombotic therapy. Many people will require more than one medicine to attain blood pressure goals. Loscar may be used with other antihypertensive medicines.
  • Hypertensive patients with left ventricular hypertrophy: Losacar causes a reduction in the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy (when the left ventricle of the heart may not be pumping efficiently.
  • Nephropathy in type 2 diabetic patients: Losacar is effective in treating diabetic neuropathy with elevated proteinuria in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and a history of high blood pressure. The medicine reduces the rate of progression of neuropathy in such people.

Losacar 25 mg is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to Losartan potassium or any other ingredients in this formulation. Coadministration of Aliskiren with Losartan potassium in patients with diabetes should be avoided.

Serious side effects may also happen with the use of Losacar. These serious side effects include liver disorder (jaundice), decreased platelets, increased levels of potassium in the bloodstream, low blood pressure, kidney disease, and rhabdomyolysis. If any of these adverse effects affect you severely, seek immediate medical attention.
