Megapen Capsules 250 mg (Ampicillin Cloxacillin)

Megapen Capsule 25mg is a combination of two drugs- ampicillin and cloxacillin in 250 mg each. This medicine is an antibiotic drug that is taken to combat bacterial infections. Megapen Capsules 250?mg is actually a semi-synthetic derivative of penicillin which is used to diagnose various infections like urinary tract infections, respiratory infections or bronchitis, infections of the stomach or intestines, lung and skin infections, pneumonia, meningitis, or gonorrhea. Megapen -XP is beta-lactam antibiotic medicine prescribed for some specific bacterial infections.

How does Megapen capsule work?

Megapen Capsule has two antibiotics Ampicillin and Cloxacillin that can prevent the formation of the bacterial protective layer or synthesis of the bacterial cells wall that plays the main role in the survival of bacteria. Both of the ingredients can effectively treat your infection. This medicine works against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

 How to take Megapen capsules:

Patients should take Megapen capsules as directed by a doctor. Take it at regular intervals without missing a dose. You have to complete the medication course of antibiotics as prescribed by a physician. Usually, Ampicillin is taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. You have to swallow the whole capsule with a little amount of water.

Megapen Capsules 250 mg

What is Megapen 250mg used for?

Megapen 250mg is a combination antibiotic capsule containing ampicillin and cloxacillin. These two antibiotics work together to cover a broader range of bacterial infections than either drug alone. It is used to treat respiratory infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), skin and soft tissue infections, ear and throat infections, urinary tract infections, and bone infections. The combination is particularly useful when the type of bacteria causing the infection is not yet known.

Who should not take Megapen 250mg?

Megapen 250mg should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to penicillin, ampicillin, cloxacillin, or any related antibiotic (known as beta-lactam antibiotics). If you have ever had a skin rash, hives, swelling, or breathing difficulty after taking a penicillin-type antibiotic, inform your doctor before starting this medicine. People with serious liver or kidney disease should use it with caution, and the dose may need to be adjusted.

What is the usual dose of Megapen 250mg?

The typical dose for adults is one to two capsules taken three to four times a day, at evenly spaced intervals throughout the day and night. Your doctor will determine the right dose based on the type and severity of your infection. The usual treatment course lasts 5 to 14 days. Always complete every dose in the course, even if your symptoms improve early — stopping the antibiotic before the course is complete can allow the infection to return.

Should Megapen 250mg be taken with or without food?

Megapen 250mg is best taken on an empty stomach — at least 30 minutes before a meal or 2 hours after eating. Both ampicillin and cloxacillin are absorbed better when food is not present in the stomach, so timing your doses correctly is important for the medicine to work at full strength. Take each capsule with a full glass of water. If you feel nauseous without food, a small dry biscuit or cracker is acceptable.

How does the combination of ampicillin and cloxacillin in Megapen 250mg work?

Ampicillin and cloxacillin both belong to the penicillin family, but they each tackle different types of bacteria. Ampicillin works well against a wide range of common bacteria, while cloxacillin specifically targets bacteria that have developed resistance to standard penicillin (known as penicillinase-producing bacteria, including certain strains of Staphylococcus). Together, the two antibiotics complement each other, providing broader coverage against mixed or resistant infections.

Is Megapen 250mg safe to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

The ampicillin component has a relatively good safety record in pregnancy and is used when medically necessary. Cloxacillin also passes into breast milk in small amounts but is not generally considered harmful to nursing infants at normal doses. As with any medicine during pregnancy or breastfeeding, your doctor needs to weigh the benefits against the risks and confirm that Megapen is the most appropriate option for your particular infection.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Megapen 250mg?

There is no direct dangerous interaction between Megapen 250mg and alcohol. However, alcohol can suppress your immune system, worsen dehydration (particularly if you have a fever), and interfere with sleep — all of which slow recovery from infection. Alcohol can also worsen some antibiotic side effects like nausea and stomach upset. For the best and fastest recovery, it is sensible to avoid or significantly reduce alcohol intake during the entire course of treatment.

How is Megapen 250mg different from taking ampicillin alone?

Megapen 250mg combines ampicillin with cloxacillin in a single capsule, which extends its ability to fight certain bacteria that ampicillin on its own cannot handle — particularly bacteria that produce an enzyme called penicillinase that destroys standard penicillin antibiotics. This makes Megapen a broader-spectrum option. However, it is not automatically better for every infection — your doctor will choose the right antibiotic based on what bacteria are most likely causing your specific infection.

Does Megapen 250mg interact with other medicines?

Yes — like other penicillin antibiotics, Megapen can interact with certain medications. It may reduce the effectiveness of combined oral contraceptive pills, so discuss additional contraceptive precautions with your pharmacist. It can enhance the effect of blood-thinning medicines (anticoagulants) like warfarin. Taking it alongside methotrexate (used for arthritis or certain cancers) can raise methotrexate levels in the body. Always share your complete medication list — including vitamins and herbal products — with your doctor or pharmacist.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Megapen 250mg?

If you remember a missed dose within a few hours, take it straight away. If it is nearly time for your next regular dose, simply skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not take two capsules together to make up for a missed dose, as this increases the risk of side effects. Consistency is important with antibiotics — uneven levels of the medicine in your body can allow bacteria to survive. Using a phone alarm or pill organiser can help you stay on schedule.

What are the common side effects of ampicillin-cloxacillin combination?

The most commonly reported side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain, and flatulence (wind). A skin rash can develop in some people, particularly those with underlying glandular fever (mononucleosis). Because antibiotics disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the body, some people develop oral thrush (a white, patchy coating in the mouth) or a vaginal yeast infection. These effects are generally mild and tend to resolve once the course is finished.

What side effects from ampicillin-cloxacillin need urgent medical attention?

Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction — including a sudden, widespread itchy rash or hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, wheezing, or difficulty breathing. Severe diarrhoea (especially if watery, bloody, or persistent) during or after the antibiotic course can signal a serious gut infection (Clostridioides difficile) and requires medical evaluation. Yellowing of the skin or eyes, or dark-coloured urine, may indicate liver involvement and should be reported to your doctor promptly.
