Nexpro 40mg contains the active ingredient Esomeprazole, which causes a significant reduction in stomach acid production. It is a prescription medication for adults with conditions that require a reduction in the gastric acid produced in the stomach. The conditions that this medication is successful in treating are:

  • Reflux esophagitis: This condition is caused by the reflux of food content in the stomach and acid into the esophagus. Esomeprazole helps prevent the reflux of stomach content from returning or relapsing.
  • Non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) (i.e., regurgitation and heartburn)
  • Healing of NSAID-associated gastric ulcers
  • Maintenance treatment of patients with reflux esophagitis
  • Reduction of risk of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) associated gastric ulcers
  • Treatment of Zollinger Ellison syndrome, where the stomach produces excessive amounts of acid, much more than ulcers or reflux disease.
  • Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) eradication

Nexpro is combined with other medications, including amoxicillin and clarithromycin, to treat patients with duodenal ulcer disease related to Helicobacter pylori infection, aiming to eliminate the H. pylori bacteria and heal ulcers.

Lowering the amount of acid in the stomach produces relief from symptoms and enables healing to occur.

Precaution with Esomeprazole

  • Do not take Nexpro 40 mg if you have hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole magnesium or any other ingredients in the medication. The coadministration of rilpivirine is contraindicated due to a significant reduction in rilpivirine exposure and loss of therapeutic effect.
  • Esomeprazole is not recommended for use in children younger than one year of age.
  • Nexpro is given in conjunction with antibiotics like clarithromycin, which should not be used in pregnancy except where no alternate therapy is appropriate, particularly during the initial three months of pregnancy.
  • Concomitant use of Nexpro 40 mg and clopidogrel should be avoided.
  • Coadministration with Nelfinavir and Atazanavir is not recommended because of reduced nelfinavir and atazanavir exposure.
  • Caution should be exercised to minimize the risk of saquinavir-related toxicities, including gastrointestinal symptoms, deep vein thrombosis, and increased triglycerides, if Nexpro is used in combination with ritonavir or saquinavir.
  • The benefits of using Esomeprazole formulation should be weighed against the increased risk of fractures as such patients may already be at high risk of developing osteoporosis-related fractures. If Esomeprazole is required, it should be managed carefully by both patients and the healthcare provider.

Side effects of Esomeprazole

Nexpro 40 mg helps most people with reflux disease; like any other medication, it may also cause side effects in a few people. A patient may require medicinal treatment if they develop some of the serious side effects. Also, informing the doctor if any side effects become troublesome is essential.

The commonly reported side effects include diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, constipation, skin rash, wind itching, dry mouth, dizziness, and swelling of the hands, ankles, and feet.

Seek immediate medical attention if any of these develops: fever, blurred vision, depression, tremors, pins and needles, hair loss, muscle twitching or jerking, increased bruising, increased sweating, increase in breast size,  changes in sleep pattern,  blood in urine, loss of consciousness or awareness, irregular heartbeat,  skin reactions especially in exposed areas, with joint pain.
