Olmesar 20 mg is a prescription medicine for patients with hypertension to lower blood pressure. Lowering blood pressure causes a significant reduction in the risk of fatal and nonfatal cardiovascular issues, primarily myocardial infarction and stroke. Control of high blood pressure should be a part of comprehensive cardiovascular risk management, which includes diabetes management, lipid control, smoking cessation, limiting sodium intake, antithrombotic therapy, and exercise.
The active ingredient of the medicine is olmesartan, which works by inhibiting the naturally occurring hormone angiotensin in the body, thereby preventing the constriction of blood vessels. Olmesartan, a type of angiotensin receptor blocker, lowers blood pressure by causing the blood vessels to relax, thereby reducing blood pressure. The medicine is not a cure for high blood pressure. It aims to control it. Therefore, it is extremely important to continue taking the medicine on a regular basis even if you feel fine. Many patients will require more than one medication to achieve targeted blood pressure. For specific advice on setting goals and management, consult a healthcare professional.
Precautions while taking Olmesar 20mg
The use of Olmesartan is contraindicated if any of the following apply:
- Allergic to Olmesartan or any other inactive ingredients of the medicine.
- Angioedema with swelling of the face, lips, hands, tongue, throat, ankles, or sudden breathing issues, or swallowing or trouble swallowing.
- During pregnancy. Taking Olmesar 20 can cause injury and even death to your baby.
- The medicine may pass into breast milk.
The antihypertensive agent is not recommended for use in children below the age of six years. Before you use Olmesar, speak to your doctor if you have narrowing of blood vessels, diabetes, kidney disease, dialysis, or are dehydrated. Patients treated with diuretics, particularly those with kidney insufficiency, should initiate Olmesar under close medical supervision and consider using the lowest starting dose. Olmesar 20 mg can prevent the normal growth of your baby’s kidneys and skull if you take the medicine during the second and third trimesters. Your healthcare provider may recommend an ultrasound.
The medication can cause severe chronic diarrhoea accompanied by weight loss. It can take months to years for symptoms to develop. Before performing activities that may require special attention, wait until you know how to respond to Olmesar. Light-headedness, dizziness, or fainting can occur when you take the medication for the first time or when your doctor advises you to increase the dose. Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including any prescription, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, or alternative medicines. In particular, the following medications may interact with Olmesar 20:
- Medicines that increase potassium levels, such as a substitute that contains potassium, a potassium supplement, or a potassium-sparing diuretic.
- Blood pressure-lowering medicines, including diuretics, or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE inhibitors, or diuretics (water pills).
- Lithium is used for the treatment of bipolar disease.
- Diuretics
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used for the reduction of pain and swelling.
Side effects associated with Olmesar 20mg
The following are not all the possible side effects you may experience when taking Olmesar 20mg. If you develop any side effects not listed here, contact your healthcare provider. All pharmaceutical agents may have unintended or undesirable effects, so-called side effects.
Common side effects of Olmesartan include decreased appetite, dizziness, headache, back pain, gastrointestinal problems (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, upset stomach, vomiting), joint pain, muscle pain, spasms/cramp, red patches on the skin, restlessness, weakness, upper respiratory infection (cough, sore throat, congested and runny nose). Olmesartan can cause abnormal test results. Your healthcare specialist will determine when to perform the blood tests and interpret the results.
Stop taking this medicine and get immediate medical help if you develop serious side effects. These include low blood pressure, ear disorder, hematuria (blood in urine), bronchitis, and Hyperuricemia (an increased level of uric acid in the blood), oedema (unusual swelling of the hands, arms, legs, ankles, and feet), kidney disorder, liver disorder, allergic reaction, acute kidney failure, and increased levels of potassium in the bloodstream.
Usage instructions Olmesar 20 mg
The dosage of Olmesar must be individualised. The usual recommended initial dose is 20 mg once a day when used as monotherapy. The oral medication can be taken before or after eating. For patients requiring further reduction in blood pressure after 14 days of treatment, the dose may be increased to 40 mg. Doses above 40 mg have not been shown to have a great effect.
Additionally, a twice-daily dosage offers no advantage over a single daily dose. There is no need to make a dose adjustment for elderly patients with moderate to marked kidney impairment. If blood pressure is not controlled by olmesartan alone, a diuretic may be added to the treatment regimen. It may be used with other antihypertensive agents.
