Oncotrex 7.5 mg is a prescription treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, as well as other rheumatic conditions, including lupus, Juvenile arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and polymyositis (muscle inflammation). The active ingredient of the medicine is Methotrexate, an immunosuppressive medicine that works by lowering the action of several enzymes involved in the immune system. The mechanism by which Methotrexate reduces the severity of arthritis is not clearly understood; however, it has been shown to cause a significant reduction in joint pain and swelling. As Methotrexate effectively reduces the damage to the joints, rather than just treating the pain, it is classified under the group of medicines called disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDS).

Methotrexate is also commonly administered during chemotherapy and as an immunosuppressant for autoimmune diseases. Methotrexate was first successfully used for the treatment of childhood leukaemia. Today, medicine is one of the primary chemotherapeutic choices for various types of cancer, including non-Hodgkin lymphoma, solid tumours found in the breast, lung, head, neck and bladder, as well as ovarian, cervical, and testicular cancer. The medication kills cancer cells by preventing them from making DNA. Methotrexate can be used alone or in combination with other medicines. Oncotrex can also be used for the treatment of severe psoriasis when other treatments are not effective. In psoriasis, skin cells in the body grow too quickly. Oncotrex 7.5 mg works by targeting and destroying rapidly growing cells.

Methotrexate is a potent drug, and one should use it only under a doctor's guidance. The medication can help control psoriasis symptoms by retarding skin cell production and suppressing inflammation. Oncotrex tablets also help reduce inflammation and relieve symptoms of Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Commonly reported symptoms are diarrhoea and abdominal pain. The medication helps prevent these symptoms from returning.

Oncotrex 7.5 mg can reduce fertility in men, especially at higher doses, and there is a chance it can harm an unborn baby. Women must not take this medicine during pregnancy. Also, women are advised to use contraceptive precautions while following the treatment and for at least six months after stopping the medication. If you are planning to become pregnant or become pregnant while taking this medicine, discuss with your healthcare provider.

Furthermore, you must not breastfeed while taking Oncotrex. Alcohol interacts with this medicine. Coadministration can potentially damage the liver. Therefore, it is advised to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum level and below the national guidelines for safe consumption levels. The medication may reduce your ability to fight off infections and potentially lead to problems with your liver, blood, or kidneys. Your healthcare specialist will perform several tests, including X-rays, blood tests, and physical examinations, both before and during the treatment with Methotrexate, to check for these issues.

If you are using Oncotrex 7.5 mg, then you can experience side effects. Inform your healthcare provider if you are concerned about potential side effects. A reduction in dose under a doctor's supervision may minimise the side effects, so that you don't need to disturb the treatment. Your healthcare professional will advise dose adjustments if necessary.

Commonly reported side effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea. These can be resolved if the medication is taken with food. An antinausea tablet can be used if required. During the treatment, mouth ulcers can occur, but using folic acid supplements under a doctor's supervision can reduce the chances. Skin dryness can also be a problem. Skin rashes or sun sensitivity may also develop. To reduce the likelihood, it is always advised to wear sunscreen and other sun protection measures, such as wearing a hat and a full-sleeved shirt.

Some people using Methotrexate report headaches, mild tiredness and mental clouding. At the same time, others may develop a temporary increase in muscle and joint pain after receiving the weekly dose. Some rare but serious side effects require immediate medical attention, including a drop in white blood cells and platelets, hepatitis, lung inflammation, hair thinning, and the formation of nodules.

Oncotrex is taken orally as it comes in tablet form. Typically, treatment should begin with a low dose, which is gradually increased based on the patient's response to the treatment. Dose adjustment should only be done by your healthcare provider. Generally, it is taken once a week on the same day. Taking more than the prescribed amount or taking more often than prescribed can give rise to severe side effects and can be life-threatening. It may take several weeks or months to experience the benefits, but do not discontinue treatment unless your healthcare provider instructs you to do so.
