Oxramet IR 5/1000 mg is a combination medication for treating type 2 diabetes. It is especially effective when metformin alone is insufficient to control blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes. The right medication is important for diabetic patients to reduce the chances of serious health complications such as kidney failure, nerve problems, heart disease, and loss of vision.

Dapagliflozin (5mg) and metformin (1000mg)  are the main active components in Oxramet IR, which are used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is available as a film-coated tablet for oral administration. Your doctor may prescribe this oral antidiabetic agent as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycaemic control. Oxramet extended-release tablet is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

How Oxramet IR works?

Oxramet IR  and metformin) helps remove excess glucose from the body through the urine. Controlling blood glucose levels is important for managing diabetes and avoiding health complications.

Oxramet  IR 5/1000mg should not be given to patients with severe renal impairment, diabetic ketoacidosis, or a history of serious hypersensitivity to dapagliflozin or metformin. There are no adequate studies on pregnant women; the use of this drug during pregnancy should be considered only when the benefits outweigh the risks. It is recommended that you either discontinue Oxramet IR or discontinue nursing if you are a breastfeeding mother.

A higher incidence of side effects has been reported in geriatric patients. Also, patients with renal impairment should exercise caution. Lactic acidosis (build-up of lactic acid in the bloodstream) may occur due to metformin. The risk is even higher in patients with dehydration, hepatic impairment, renal insufficiency, and acute congestive heart failure. Oxramet extended-release tablets should generally be avoided in patients with hepatic impairment. Before initiating the treatment with this combination medicine, treat hypotension (low blood pressure) in the elderly, patients on diuretics and patients with renal impairment. Carefully monitor for signs and symptoms. Metformin may lower your vitamin B12 levels.
