Oxramet IR 10/1000mg is a combination of dapagliflozin and metformin in extended-release form. It is a prescription oral antidiabetic drug used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to achieve adequate control of blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus when treatment with both metformin and dapagliflozin is necessary. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or the body is unable to use it properly. This condition leads to high blood sugar levels. Dapagliflozin eliminates excess sugar from your body and lowers blood sugar levels. Lowering blood sugar levels helps to prevent heart disease.
On the other hand, metformin inhibits hepatic glucose production. For the treatment of diabetes mellitus, the medicine is used in combination with diet and exercise. Your doctor may prescribe this combination therapy if your diabetes cannot be controlled with other medicines to treat diabetes. The combination therapy is not indicated for patients with type 1 diabetes. It is not known whether the oral antidiabetic agent is safe and effective in children younger than 18 years.
Oxramet IR 10/1000mg is not recommended for patients with type 1 diabetes and diabetic ketoacidosis (a condition associated with diabetes where your body produces high levels of blood acids called ketones). Also, the antidiabetic medicine should not be given to patients with severe renal impairment. Individuals with known hypersensitivity to dapagliflozin and metformin should avoid taking Oxramet IR.
Do not take the Oxramet extended-release tablet if you are allergic to metformin, dapagliflozin, or any other ingredients present in the medicine. Also, avoid taking the medicine if you have ever had a diabetic coma, severely reduced kidney function, severe infection, uncontrolled diabetes, liver problems, or serious heart problems. Discontinue treatment for a short time if you have a condition that may be associated with dehydration. You may have symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, exposure to heat, or drinking less fluid than normal. Stop taking the oral antidiabetic drug and immediately contact your doctor if you experience symptoms of lactic acidosis (build-up of lactic acid in the bloodstream).
The possible side effects of Oxramet extended-release 10/1000mg tablet include difficulty breathing, cloudy urine, burning or painful urination, frequent urge to urinate, decreased appetite, bladder pain, hives, general ill feeling, and lower back or side pain. A higher incidence of side effects has been reported in geriatric patients. Also, patients with renal impairment should exercise caution. Lactic acidosis (build-up of lactic acid in the bloodstream) may occur due to metformin. The risk is even higher in patients with dehydration, hepatic impairment, renal insufficiency, and acute congestive heart failure.
The amount of Oxramet XR 10/1000mg Tablet medicine you take depends on your condition and the doses of other antidiabetic medicines you currently take. Your healthcare provider will tell you exactly what dose of Oxramet IR to take. The recommended dose is one tablet twice daily. Swallow the tablet with a glass of water. Take the antidiabetic medicine with food. This helps reduce stomach side effects. Take the tablet twice daily, once in the morning and once in the evening. Your doctor may prescribe this combination medicine, along with other medicines, to lower the amount of sugar in your blood. These may be oral medicines or injectable drugs to control blood sugar. Remember to take these other antidiabetic agents as your doctor has told you. This will help you achieve the blood glucose targets.
To control your diabetes, you still need to keep to a diet and exercise, even when you are taking medicine. In particular, if you have been advised to follow a diabetic weight control diet, continue to follow it while you are taking this medicine.
