Panlipase is a prescription pancreatic enzyme medicine used to enhance digestion in people who cannot digest food properly because of exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. It contains a mixture of digestive enzymes from the pig pancreas, including proteases, lipases, and amylases. The medication is safe and effective in children.
How to use (infographics and instructions)
Take the medication with meals and snacks. Swallow the tablet whole. Avoid chewing, crushing, or holding it in your mouth. If you do, you may develop mouth irritation, or it may change the way this medication works. Take each dose with plenty of water to ensure you swallow the whole pill. Keep taking this medication as you have been prescribed.
Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)
The safety and effectiveness of Panlipase have not been demonstrated in pediatric patients twelve years and older. Care should be taken to ensure the medication is not chewed or retained in the mouth to avoid mouth irritation. Patients with renal impairment, gout, renal impairment, or hyperuricemia should be cautious while using this medication. Let your health care specialist know before taking this medication if you have or are:
- Allergic to pork products
- History of intestinal blockage or a condition referred to as fibrosing colonopathy
- Kidney disease, gout, or hyperuricemia (high blood uric acid)
- Problem swallowing capsules
- Pregnant or planning to conceive. It is not known if the medication will harm your unborn baby.
- It is still not understood if the medication passes into breast milk.
- Taking other medications.
Side Effects
Even though it may be rare, some people may experience very bad and sometimes life-threatening side effects when taking a medication. Seek immediate medical help if you develop any of the following signs and symptoms that may be related to a very bad side effect:
- Symptoms of an allergic reaction include itching, rash, hives, red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin, with or without fever, trouble swallowing, breathing, or talking, unusual hoarseness, or swelling of the face, lips, throat, or tongue.
- Symptoms of gallstones include sudden pain in the upper area of the stomach, yellow skin or eyes, or fever or chills.
- Mouth or tongue irritation
- Swollen gland
- This medication may increase the chance of fibrosing colonopathy (a rare bowel problem). This bowel disease can be very bad and may lead to the need for surgery. Speak to your healthcare provider if you have developed severe stomach pain, upset stomach, trouble passing stools, diarrhea, or bloating.
Minor side effects of the medicine are gas, dizziness, headache, upset stomach, neck pain, sore throat, stuffy nose, nosebleed, diarrhea, constipation, and anal irritation. Seek medical help if any of these side effects bother you or don’t resolve.
