Prazopress XL 2.5
Prazopress XL 2.5 mg is prescribed to treat essential hypertension (high blood pressure). It can be given as the initial and sole agent, or it may be used in a treatment regimen in combination with diuretics and other hypertensive medications as required for proper patient response. Prazopress XL is also used in the symptomatic treatment of urinary obstruction caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. It is also considered in patients awaiting prostatic surgery. Prazosin is the main active component of Prazopress 2.5 mg.
How to use Prazopress XL 2.5 mg
Prazopress XL 2.5 mg can be taken before or after consuming food. The medication could be swallowed whole with a glass full of water. Patients should avoid chewing or crushing the pills. The medication dose should be adjusted per the patient’s blood pressure response.
For treatment of hypertension: The initial dose is 2.5 mg once a day. Dosage may be increased gradually as per the patient’s response to treatment.
For benign prostatic hyperplasia: The initial dose is 2.5 mg once daily for 3 to 7 days and should be adjusted per clinical response.
Hypertension usually doesn’t have symptoms, so keep taking this medicine even if you feel well. If you discontinue treatment, your blood pressure may increase and put you at high risk of heart attack or stroke. You may need to take this medicine for the rest of your life.
Precautions Prazopress XL 2.5 mg
Previous anaphylaxis with Prazopress XL 2.5 mg is an absolute contraindication. Caution should be taken in patients with hypotension due to the potential side effects of orthostatic hypotension. Caution should also be taken in patients with cataracts, and this medication can contribute to floppy iris syndrome.
Prazosin is contraindicated in patients with known sensitivity to prazosin hydrochloride or other ingredients.
Prazopress is not recommended for use in children under the age of 12 years since safe conditions for its usage have not been established. Let your healthcare professional know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Also, let them know of a history of liver disorder, heart failure, kidney disorder, or if you are having eye surgery for a cataract. You need to keep a close eye on your blood pressure.
Side effects of Prazopress XL 2.5 mg
The most common side effects of Prazosin include headache, unusual beating of the heart, dizziness, and nausea. Most side effects resolve when you get used to this medicine. It may also cause your blood pressure to go too low, especially when you first take this medicine. Your healthcare provider will advise you on preventing or reducing these adverse effects.
