Pruease 2 mg is a prescription treatment for patients with chronic constipation of unknown cause. It is usually prescribed in adults in whom laxatives are unable to provide adequate relief. The medicine contains the active ingredient Prucalopride, which belongs to a class of medicines known as gastrointestinal prokinetics. It increases the number of bowel movements by stimulating certain processes that involve the contraction of the muscles of the gut required for bowel movement. This way, it relieves symptoms such as hard and infrequent stools and incomplete bowel movements.
Precautions (Things to remember, allergies, and warnings)
- Do not take Pruease 2 mg if:
- You are allergic to Prucalopride or any of the ingredients present in the medicine.
- You require dialysis
- You have serious problems with your gut, like blockages, Crohn’s disease, holes in your intestines, ulcerative colitis, or toxic megacolon.
- Talk to your doctor before taking Pruease. Take special care with this medicine and let your healthcare provider know if you:
- Suffer from severe kidney disease
- Have severe kidney disease
- Are currently under the doctor’s supervision for a serious health problem such as heart or lung disease, mental health problems, a hormonal disorder, cancer, or AIDS.
- If you have very bad diarrhea, the birth control tablet may become ineffective, and an additional method of contraception must be used.
- Pruease may cause an increase in suicidal behavior. All patients receiving Prucalopride should be monitored for persistent worsening of depression and emergency suicidal behavior. Family members and friends of patients should be counseled to be aware of the presence of any unusual changes in behavior/mood and alert the healthcare professional.
- Pruease is not recommended for use by pregnant women. Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant. It is importnat for women of reproductive potential to use a reliable contraceptive method to prevent pregnancy during the treatment.
- When breastfeeding, the medicine may pass into breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended while receiving this medicine. Speak to your healthcare provider for more information regarding this.
- The medicine contains lactose. Patients dealing with a rare hereditary condition of galactose intolerance or total lactose deficiency.
- Certain medications can interact with Prucalopride
- Erythromycin to manage and treat bacterial infections
- Ketoconazole used for the treatment of fungal infections
- Verapamil for the treatment of high blood pressure and to control chest pain (angina)
- Cyclosporine for organ rejection post-transplant
- Digoxin for heart failure and abnormal heart rhythm
- Quinidine to treat irregular heartbeats
- Erythromycin is used to manage and treat bacterial infections.
- An atropic-like substance to decrease mucus secretion after anesthesia.
Side effects of Pruease 2 mg
Pruease can contribute to serious side effects, including:
- Unexpected/unusual change in the behavior
- Thoughts of harming yourself or suicidal thoughts. Discontinue treatment straight away and inform your healthcare specialist immediately if yoru depressive symptoms worsen, you feel hopeless and sad, and you begin to have thoughts of suicide.
The most reported side effects of Prucalopride are diarrhea, vomiting, headache, gas, dizziness, nausea, stomach area, and bloating. These side effects are temporary and resolve within a few days. If any side effects become bothersome, contact your healthcare professional.
How to use? (infographics and instructions)
The medicine should always be taken as prescribed by the healthcare provider. Taking higher doses than recommended will not improve its effectiveness.
In adults, the recommended dose for most patients is one tablet of 2 mg Pruease daily.
For the elderly or patients with kidney or liver disorders, if you are above 65 years of age or have a severe liver disorder, a reduced dose may be recommended, which your healthcare professional may increase (if required). Your healthcare specialist may also recommend a lower dose for patients with kidney disease. If the treatment is discontinued early, symptoms of constipation may recur.
The medicine is not recommended for children under 18 years of age.
