Simvastatin 20 mg
Simvastatin 20 mg is a prescription medication that helps in lowering the “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and raises “good” cholesterol (HDL) in the blood. This medicine is also prescribed to prevent heart disease like storks and heart attacks. The drug belongs to a group of medicine called “statins”. Simvastatin comes in various dosage; your doctor will set the dose after examining your health condition.
Take Simvastatin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Usually, it is once a day tablet, preferably in the evening after dinner. You can also take this tablet without food if you feel nausea after taking this medicine. Adults are generally prescribed for the dose between 1 to 40 mg according to their health condition. Do not crush or chew the tablet, take a whole tablet, and swallow it with the glass of water. Do not alter the dose your own if you feel fine, consult your doctor, and follow his advice. Try to take medicine at the same time regularly to avoid missing the dose. In case if you miss the dose take it as soon as you remember or if the time of next dosage is near than skip the missed dose. Mention all the medicines and health supplements to your doctor that you may be taking to avoid any side effects. You may require taking Simvastatin for the long term for treating your high cholesterol issue. Do not stop taking medication unless your doctor asks you. Store Simvastatin at room temperature and away from moisture, light, and heat.

Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or planning a family, including the breastfeeding moms. It is not recommended to take Simvastatin if you are taking certain medication like Boceprevir, Cyclosporine, Gemfibrozil, Nefazodone, Telaprevir, certain antibiotics, and HIV medicines. Keep all your medicine out of the reach of children and pets. Do mention your doctor about liver, kidney, thyroid or diabetes disorder if you ever had. Do not drink grapefruit juice while you are on Simvastatin treatment.
Side Effects of Simvastatin 20 mg
The side effects of Simvastatin are rare. Out of 1000 patients, only 1 may experience common or serious side effects. Call your doctor if you experience any unusual effects while taking this tablet. Some of the reported side effects of Simvastatin are:
- Yellowing of the skin (including white eyeball may turn yellow), or dark coloured urine
- Pain in muscles, feeling of weakness or cramps
- Skin rashes or pin-red patches
- Stomach pain
- Breathing issues, cough, or weight loss
- In rare cases, the serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) is reported in patients who takes Simvastatin.
