Syndopa Plus 25 100 is indicated for the treatment of Parkinson's disease in adults. It is effective at relieving many of the symptoms of Parkinsonism, particularly bradykinesia. It helps manage tremor, sialorrhoea, dysphagia, and postural instability related to Parkinson's disease. When the therapeutic response to levodopa alone is irregular, and signs and symptoms may not be relieved, Syndopa Plus may be introduced to reduce the symptoms of Parkinson's. It is believed that Parkinsonism symptoms develop due to a lack of dopamine (a naturally occurring hormone produced by brain cells). The hormone plays a role in relaying signals in certain regions of the brain that control muscle movement. Trouble with movements occurs when a very small amount of dopamine is produced.
Syndopa Plus combines two medicines: levodopa (100mg) and carbidopa (25mg). Levodopa works by replenishing dopamine in the brain, while Carbidopa ensures that enough levodopa reaches the brain where it is required. In many patients, this medicine reduces symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
Precautions with the Levodopa and Carbidopa pill
Syndopa Plus should not be administered to patients already taking levodopa alone; however, levodopa must also be discontinued at least 12 hours before initiating Levodopa/Carbidopa. It should be substituted at a dosage that will offer approximately 20% of the previous levodopa dosage.
Patients taking this combination medicine should be instructed to avoid taking additional levodopa unless prescribed by a healthcare professional. Dyskinesia may develop in patients who previously received levodopa alone because Carbidopa allows more levodopa to reach the brain and, hence, more dopamine to be produced. In such a condition, dose reduction is required. Those with a history of severe involuntary movements or psychotic episodes when receiving levodopa alone should be carefully observed when Syndopa Plus is substituted.
As with levodopa, Syndopa Plus may cause involuntary movements and mental disturbances. These reactions may occur due to increased brain dopamine, and the use of Levodopa and Syndopa Plus may cause recurrence. Dose reduction may be required. Patients should be carefully monitored for the development of mental changes, depression, suicidal tendencies, or other serious antisocial behaviour. Those with a history or current psychoses should be treated cautiously. Caution should be taken with concomitant administration of psychoactive medications and Syndopa Plus. Patients suffering from chronic wide-angle glaucoma may be treated cautiously with Syndopa Plus. Intraocular pressure must be well-controlled, and patients should be watched closely for changes in intraocular pressure during therapy.
Caution should be exercised when taking this combination medicine in cases of liver or kidney disease. Patients should inform their healthcare specialist about all other medications they have been using, as many may reduce the effectiveness of Syndopa Plus or alter its mechanism of action. The healthcare provider should also be aware of the pregnancy status.
Side effects of the Levodopa and Carbidopa pill
Syndopa Plus may give rise to side effects such as vomiting, nausea, dry mouth, headache, and sweating. Initially, this combination medicine may cause a sudden, significant reduction in blood pressure when you change positions. Therefore, it's advisable to rise slowly if you have been sitting or lying down.
The combination medicine can cause a sudden onset of dizziness and sleepiness, so avoid driving or engaging in any activity that requires complete attention until you know how this medicine affects you.
Usage instructions - Levodopa and Carbidopa pill
Dosage should be determined based on the individual's needs, and adjustments may be necessary. The tablet can be taken without food, but it is better to avoid a high-protein diet and dairy products while taking this medicine.
The treatment is best initiated with one tablet of Levodopa/Carbidopa 100/25 mg, taken three times a day. This dosage schedule provided 75 mg of Carbidopa per day. Dosage may be increased by one tablet daily or every other day as needed, until a dosage equivalent to eight tablets of Levodopa/Carbidopa 100/25 is reached. The treatment should be initiated with Levodopa/Carbidopa in patients who have not previously received treatment with Levodopa/Carbidopa. The response to the treatment is typically observed within a day, and sometimes even after a single dose.
