Virovir 250 mg (Famciclovir) – Affordable Famvir Alternative

Virovir 250 mg (Famciclovir) is an antiviral medication used to treat recurrent outbreaks of cold sores in adults who have a healthy immune system (the body system that fight against harmful viruses, bacteria, and fungi). It is a prodrug of penciclovir, a nucleoside analog DNA polymerase. Famciclovir is currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster infections. Each Virovir tablets contains Famciclovir as an active medicinal substance.

What is Virovir 250 mg used for?

Virovir 250 mg is used to treat:

Immunocompetent Adult Patients

  • Cold sores, and inflamed blister in the mouth, caused by infection with the herpes simplex virus.
  • Herpes genitalis or Genital herpes
  • Herpes zoster (shingles).
  • HIV-infected Adults
  • Genital herpes
  • Oralabial herpes (an infection caused by herpes simplex virus). It occurs on the lip.

How does Virovir 250 mg work?

Virovir 250 mg works by stopping the virus from multiplying and shortens the time the virus is released and spread, which helps to heal.

What medications interact with Virovir?

The following medicines should be avoided, in case doctor recommends you Virovir (Famciclovir) to avoid possible drug interactions.

Virovir 250 mg

What is Virovir 250mg used for?

Virovir 250mg contains famciclovir 250mg — an oral antiviral prodrug converted to penciclovir (the active form) for treatment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Key indications at 250mg: recurrent genital herpes (250mg three times daily for 5 days), recurrent herpes labialis, herpetic whitlow, and suppressive therapy for frequent genital herpes recurrences (250mg twice daily). Famciclovir's intracellular penciclovir triphosphate has a much longer half-life than acyclovir — providing sustained antiviral activity with simpler dosing schedules than acyclovir.

How does Virovir 250mg work against herpes simplex virus?

Famciclovir is a diacetyl 6-deoxy prodrug of penciclovir. After oral absorption, famciclovir is rapidly converted to penciclovir by intestinal and hepatic esterases and xanthine oxidase. Penciclovir is then phosphorylated by HSV thymidine kinase to penciclovir triphosphate — the active antiviral form. Penciclovir triphosphate competitively inhibits HSV DNA polymerase, blocking viral DNA synthesis. Key advantage over acyclovir: penciclovir triphosphate has an intracellular half-life of 10–20 hours (vs. 1 hour for acyclovir triphosphate) — maintaining antiviral activity over longer periods between doses.

How should Virovir 250mg be dosed for recurrent genital herpes?

Recurrent genital herpes epiSodiumic treatment: 250mg three times daily for 5 days — begin at the prodrome (tingling/burning before lesion). One-day treatment: 1,000mg twice daily for 1 day is an alternative (using four 250mg tablets per dose). Suppressive therapy: 250mg twice daily continuously for 6–12 months (then reassess recurrence frequency). Herpes labialis: 1,500mg as a single dose at prodrome onset (six 250mg tablets) or 750mg twice daily for 1 day. For immunocompromised patients: 500mg twice daily for 7 days. All doses can be taken with or without food.

Is Virovir 250mg safe in patients with kidney disease?

Famciclovir and its active metabolite penciclovir are renally cleared. Dose adjustment is required in renal impairment: for recurrent genital herpes epiSodiumic therapy with eGFR 40–59: 125mg TID; eGFR 20–39: 125mg BID; eGFR <20: 125mg once daily; haemodialysis: 125mg after each session. For suppressive therapy in renal impairment: similarly reduced doses. Check eGFR before prescribing famciclovir, particularly in elderly patients or those with pre-existing renal conditions. Unlike acyclovir, famciclovir at therapeutic doses rarely causes crystalluria — but renal clearance reduction still requires dose modification.

Is Virovir 250mg safe during pregnancy for herpes management?

Famciclovir pregnancy safety data is more limited than acyclovir — animal studies show no teratogenicity but human pregnancy registry data is smaller. Most guidelines recommend acyclovir or valacyclovir over famciclovir for herpes management during pregnancy, given their more extensive human safety records. Famciclovir is classified as Pregnancy Category B. If herpes treatment is needed during pregnancy and alternative agents are unavailable, famciclovir may be considered with specialist advice. Breastfeeding: penciclovir is excreted in breast milk — caution advised; consider alternative if possible.

What drug interactions affect Virovir 250mg?

Famciclovir/penciclovir has relatively few significant drug interactions. Probenecid reduces penciclovir renal excretion — increases penciclovir exposure; generally not clinically significant at 250mg. Cimetidine reduces penciclovir renal clearance similarly. The conversion of famciclovir to penciclovir involves xanthine oxidase — allopurinol (xanthine oxidase inhibitor) theoretically reduces penciclovir formation; the clinical significance is uncertain. No significant CYP450 interactions (famciclovir/penciclovir does not inhibit or induce CYP450 enzymes). Avoid co-administration with nephrotoxic drugs in renally impaired patients.

How does Virovir 250mg compare to acyclovir 200mg for herpes simplex?

Famciclovir 250mg TID and acyclovir 200mg five times daily treat recurrent genital herpes with equivalent clinical efficacy. The major practical advantage of famciclovir: three-times-daily vs. five-times-daily dosing — dramatically simpler and associated with better adherence. Penciclovir's longer intracellular half-life (10–20 hours) allows less frequent dosing while maintaining equivalent antiviral effect. Cost difference: acyclovir generics are typically cheaper than famciclovir generics. For suppressive therapy, famciclovir 250mg BID and acyclovir 400mg BID are both effective — choice based on patient preference and cost.

Is Virovir 250mg equivalent to Famvir 250mg?

Yes. Virovir 250mg and branded Famvir 250mg both contain famciclovir 250mg in bioequivalent formulations. Virovir is the generic alternative providing the same antiviral efficacy against HSV at significantly lower cost — important for patients requiring long-term suppressive famciclovir therapy.

Can I order Virovir 250mg from PremiumRxDrugs for international delivery?

Yes. PremiumRxDrugs.com ships Virovir 250mg to the USA, UK, Australia, and many other countries. Our genuine manufacturer-verified antiviral medications, competitive pricing, and free worldwide shipping on qualifying orders make us a reliable international source for famciclovir therapy.

What side effects does Virovir 250mg cause?

Famciclovir is very well tolerated at 250mg. Common: headache (most frequent, typically mild), nausea, and dizziness. Less common: fatigue, diarrhoea, and pruritus. Neurological: confusion and hallucinations are very rare at 250mg — more a concern with high-dose or renally impaired patients. Unlike acyclovir, famciclovir rarely causes crystalluria. No significant bone marrow suppression reported. Rash occasionally occurs. All side effects are generally mild and self-limiting — famciclovir is one of the best-tolerated oral antivirals for HSV management.

How does famciclovir reduce herpes transmission risk to partners?

Famciclovir 250mg twice daily for suppression reduces subclinical HSV viral shedding by approximately 50–70% — the primary mechanism of transmission to sexual partners. Reduced shedding lowers (but does not eliminate) transmission risk. Studies with valacyclovir (similar mechanism via penciclovir/acyclovir) show 48% reduction in HSV-2 transmission to uninfected partners in serodiscordant couples using daily suppressive therapy. Consistent condom use combined with suppressive famciclovir provides the greatest risk reduction. Partners should also be tested for HSV status to understand their own susceptibility.
