X-Vir 1 mg is indicated for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in adults. It can be prescribed to people with compensated liver disease, whose liver is damaged but still functions properly, and to people with decompensated liver disease, whose liver is damaged and does not function properly. The active ingredient of the medicine is Entecavir, which helps stop the spread of the Hepatitis B virus in the body.
Precautions (warning, allergy, things to remember)
X-Vir is contraindicated in patients with previously demonstrated hypersensitivity to Entecavir or any other ingredients of the medicine. Renal function needs to be evaluated before and during the treatment in liver transplant patients receiving tacrolimus or ciclosporin.
Talk to your healthcare professional before taking X-Vir 1 mg:
- If you have ever had problems with your kidneys. This is important because antiviral medicine is eliminated from the body of a patient through the kidneys, and the dosing regimen may need to be adjusted.
- If you are also infected with HIV: Patients should not take X-Vir for the treatment of hepatitis B infection unless they are taking HIV medicines at the same time, as the effectiveness of future HIV therapy may be reduced.
- Entecavir can cause lactic acidosis (an excess of lactic acid in the bloodstream). Symptoms include vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain, which might cause lactic acidosis. This is a rare but serious side effect. The conditions more often affect women, particularly if they are overweight.
There are no recommendations for this antiviral medicine in children under two years of age or weighing less than 10 kg.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: It is important to inform the healthcare provider in case the pregnancy is confirmed or a patient is planning to conceive. There is still not enough evidence to demonstrate that this antiviral medicine is safe to use during pregnancy. Hence, this medication must not be used by pregnant women unless specified by the healthcare provider. Furthermore, women of reproductive potential should use an effective birth control method to avoid pregnancy while receiving the antiviral medication.
Driving & using machinery: Tiredness, sleepiness, and common side effects associated with the medicine may affect your ability to drive a vehicle and use complex machinery.
X-Vir contains lactose: Entecavir contains lactose. If a healthcare professional tells a patient that they have an intolerance to some sugars, it is important to talk to the expert.
Like any other medicine, Entecavir X-Vir 1 mg can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Patients receiving Entecavir have reported common side effects such as headache, fatigue (extreme tiredness), insomnia (inability to sleep), vomiting, diarrhoea, somnolence (sleepiness), dizziness, dyspepsia (indigestion), and increased blood levels of liver enzymes.
Uncommon side effects associated with this antiviral medicine include rash, hair loss and allergic reactions. If you get any of these side effects, contact your healthcare specialist right away.
The treatment should be started by a healthcare expert who is an expert in managing chronic hepatitis B infection. Not all patients need to take the same dose of this medicine.
For adults, the usual suggested dose is either 0.5 mg or 1 mg once a day. The tablet should be taken on an empty stomach at least two hours after a meal and at least two hours before the next meal.
The dose of this antiviral medicine usually depends on :
- Whether the patient has been treated for HBV infection before and what medication they received.
- Whether the patient has kidney problems, in this case, a low dose is usually recommended or instructed by the healthcare expert to be taken less often than once a day.
- Liver function
For children and adolescents (from 2 to less than 18 years), X-Vir 0.5 mg tablets are available. A paediatrician who is an expert in dealing with children’s healthcare problems will decide the right dose based on the child’s weight. Patients with kidney disease require dose adjustment.
For patients who cannot swallow pills or for whom a dose reduction is appropriate, other Entecavir-containing products with more suitable preparations may be available.
It is important to take the dose recommended by the healthcare specialist to ensure that the medicine is fully effective and decreases the risk of resistance to treatment. Check the prescription provided by the healthcare expert for the length and duration of the treatment.
Some patients may develop very serious hepatitis symptoms when they discontinue treatment. Seek immediate medical help for any changes in symptoms that are observed after treatment discontinuation.
