Zeptol 200 mg is a medicine prescribed to treat epilepsy, bipolar affective disorders, and trigeminal neuralgia. It treats complex/simple partial seizures with or without secondary generalization, generalized tonic-clonic seizures, and mixed forms of seizures. Zeptol can be used for both monotherapy and combination treatment. Generally, this medicine is not effective in absences and myoclonic seizures. It is prescribed to patients with acute mania and to treat bipolar disorder to prevent or stop recurrence.

This medication is also equally effective in treating trigeminal neuralgia because of multiple sclerosis (either typical or atypical) and painful diabetic neuropathy. The active ingredient of the medicine is Carbamazepine, which is an anticonvulsant agent specifically discovered to stabilize the electrical activity in the nerves and brain. In patients with epilepsy, the working mechanism includes the stoppage of electrical signals that usually build up in the nerve cells in the brain of such patients

Do not use Zeptol if any of the following apply to you:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Carbamazepine or any other components of the medicine
  • History of bone marrow depression
  • Atrioventricular block
  • History of hepatic porphyrias
  • Coadministration with monoamine-oxidase inhibitors

Zeptol should only be administered under medical supervision. It should only be prescribed after a critical benefit-risk appraisal under close observation in patients with a history of hepatic, cardiac and renal insufficiency.

Avoid alcohol consumption or intake of other medicines that may make you dizzy or sleepy while taking Zeptol until you speak to your healthcare provider. Concomitant use with alcohol or medicines that cause dizziness or sleepiness may cause worsening of dizziness/sleepiness.

Do not drive a vehicle, operate complex machinery, or engage in other complex activities until you know how this antiepileptic medicine affects you. This medication may slow your thinking and motor skills.

Your healthcare specialist should be aware of your pregnancy status and let your healthcare professional know the best way to manage your condition. Those with bipolar disorder who wish to become pregnant need to make important decisions. It is necessary to discuss the risks and benefits of taking the medicine with your healthcare professional.

Furthermore, Carbamazepine has been related to the increased risk of defects of the face and head, fingernails, and delay in development. Precautions may be taken to decrease the risk of this effect. In this case, one should not stop the treatment without discussing your healthcare provider. Treatment discontinuation at the time of pregnancy has been related to a significant increase in symptom relapse.

When it comes to breastfeeding during the treatment, caution is taken since the medications do pass into the breast milk. Talk to your healthcare provider about whether it is safe to breastfeed while receiving Zeptol medicine.

The most common side effects of Zeptol include drowsiness, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, and problems with coordination and walking.  These side effects are temporary and usually resolve within a few days.

The medicine may cause serious side effects as well. These are:

  • Irregular heartbeat: Symptoms include breathlessness, fast/slow/or pounding heartbeat, feeling lightheaded and fainting.
  • Liver diseases: Symptoms include dark urine, easy bruising, loss of appetite, jaundice, nausea/vomiting, pain on the right side of your stomach area

Seek immediate medical help if you develop any of the symptoms below. These are not the possible side effects of this medicine. For more information, please consult your healthcare specialist.

Do not stop taking Zeptol without first talking to your healthcare provider. Sudden discontinuation can contribute to serious problems. Stopping the antiseizure medicine suddenly in a patient who has epilepsy may give rise to unstoppable seizures. It is important to take this medicine exactly as prescribed by the healthcare specialist. They will tell you how much medicine needs to be taken to get rid of the symptoms. The medication must be taken with food. Avoid breaking, chewing, or crushing the tablet. One must tell their healthcare provider if they are unable to swallow the extended-release pill.

When it comes to the length and treatment duration, you must inform your healthcare provider how you feel things are going during the initial weeks after you begin taking this antiepileptic medicine. It will probably take a few weeks to observe a huge difference in your symptoms and decide if the medicine is appropriate for you. Mood stabilizers are generally needed for life long for individuals with bipolar disorder. Your healthcare specialist can best discuss the treatment duration based on your medical condition.
