The Azithral eye drop is composed of an active therapeutic agent called Azithromycin, a second generation macrolide prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections. Azithromycin is derived from erythromycin and is more potent against certain bacterial species than erythromycin. The eye drop has been proposed as a novel treatment for the treatment of blepharitis (a common eyelid inflammation).
