Cetcip-L 5 mg is a prescription treatment for adults and children 12 years of age and over for the fast relief of nasal and non-nasal seasonal (grass, trees, pollen, hay fever, ragweed) and year-round (ex-animal dander, dust, mould) allergy symptoms. The symptoms include sneezing, post-nasal discharge, stuffiness, an itchy nose and throat, watery eyes, and chronic idiopathic urticaria (pruritus and hives) due to allergic reactions.
The active ingredient of the medicine is LevoLevocetirizine, an antihistamine which effectively reduces the severity of pruritus and hives in patients with urticaria. It works by restricting a substance called histamine, released by the body during an allergic reaction.
Precautions with LevoLevocetirizine tablet
Cetcip-L 5 mg is contraindicated in those patients with a known hypersensitivity to it or any other ingredient in the medicine.
There are no adequate studies on pregnant women. Until such data become available, the medicine should not be used by pregnant women unless advised to do so by a healthcare provider. The extent of Cetcip-L excretion in breast milk is not known. Therefore, it is not recommended that nursing mothers use Cetcip-L unless directed to do so by a healthcare provider.
Levocetirizine is well tolerated by patients aged 65 and over. A safety assessment of this medicine in elderly patients compared to younger individuals revealed no significant differences. However, sensitivity to side effects remains a possibility in some older adults. This medicine should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing liver conditions. For those with moderate liver impairment, an initial dose of 5 mg is recommended.
Check with your healthcare specialist if you have predisposing factors for urinary retention, as this medicine increases the risk of urinary retention. If you are someone who has epilepsy or is at high risk of convulsions, you should seek immediate medical help.
The medicine should not be given to children below the age of 6 years because the tablet preparation does not allow the necessary dose adjustment. To date, no medication has been identified that significantly affects the absorption of Levocetirizine.
The medication contains lactose, so if you have a lactose intolerance, be sure to seek medical help. Discontinue using Levocetirizine for three days if you are undergoing an allergy test, as this medication may affect the accuracy of the test results.
Side effects of LevoLevocetirizine tablet
Like all medicines, Cetcip-L 5 mg tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody experiences them. Rarely people taking Levocetirizine have thought about committing suicide, and if this is the case with you, then discontinue treatment and see your healthcare specialist.
- Seek immediate medical help at the first signs of a severe allergic reaction. The symptoms include fever, rash, itchiness, trouble breathing, and swelling of the face, tongue, throat, neck and eyelids. This very rare side effect may occur soon after you first take the medicine, or it may develop later.
- Common side effects include fatigue, sleepiness, headache, dizziness, nausea, rhinitis (swelling and irritation inside the nose), dry mouth, pharyngitis (sore throat), and diarrhoea.
- Uncommon side effects include agitation, abdominal pain, pruritus (itching), weakness, rash, general unwellness, abnormal skin sensations, and tingling in the hands and feet.
How to take a LevoLevocetirizine tablet?
Make sure you take Levocetirizine exactly as your healthcare provider has told you. The medication is available as a tablet that should be swallowed with a sufficient amount of water.
- For children aged 6 to 12 years, the recommended dose is 5 mg twice daily, administered as half a tablet twice daily.
- The recommended dose is 10 mg once daily, administered as a single tablet, for adults and children aged 12 years and older.
- For those suffering from moderate to severe kidney insufficiency, the recommended dose to take is 5 mg once a day as a half tablet. If you are dealing with severe renal condition, contact your healthcare provider, who may adjust the dose accordingly. If your child has kidney disease, don't hesitate to get in touch with your healthcare specialist, who may adjust your child's dose according to their specific needs. In patients with renal insufficiency, the lowest dose is recommended. The duration of treatment usually depends on the type, duration, and condition of the patient. Rarely, intense itching and urticaria may return on treatment discontinuation.
