Olmecip 40 mg is prescribed for the treatment of hypertension, also known as high blood pressure. It can be used alone or with other antihypertensive agents to reduce blood pressure. Olmecip can be used as monotherapy for high blood pressure in the absence of comorbidities such as kidney disease, diabetes, heart failure, and cerebrovascular events. High blood pressure increases the workload of the heart and the arteries. If left untreated, damage to the blood vessels of the brain, heart, and kidneys can occur, and may eventually lead to a stroke, kidney or heart failure. Hypertension also elevates the risk of developing heart attacks. Reducing blood pressure lowers the risks of fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events, mainly strokes and myocardial infarction.
The active ingredient of the medicine, Olmesartan, works by inhibiting the naturally occurring hormone angiotensin II in the body, which is responsible for causing blood vessel constriction. Olmesartan reduces blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure. This antihypertensive medicine is not a cure for a disease; it helps to control the condition. Therefore, it is extremely essential to continue taking Olmecip on a regular basis, even if you feel fine.
Things to remember while taking the Olmecip 40 mg
The use of Olmecip 40 should be avoided in patients who are hypersensitive to this medicine or any other ingredient in the formulation. Concomitant use of angiotensin receptor antagonists, including Olmecip, with aliskiren-containing medicines in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus or moderate to severe kidney impairment is contraindicated. It should not be given to pregnant women. Taking an Olmesartan formulation during pregnancy can cause injury and even death to your baby. Moreover, Olmesartan may pass into breast milk. Therefore, it should not be used in women who are breastfeeding.
The antihypertensive agent should also be avoided if you are already taking a blood pressure-lowering medicine that contains aliskiren and you have kidney disease or diabetes. It is essential to recognise the signs and symptoms of hypotension (very low blood pressure) in patients who are volume or salt-depleted.
Before you use Olmecip, speak to your healthcare specialist if any of the following apply to you:
- Experience an allergic reaction to any medicine used to lower blood pressure.
- Have diabetes, kidney or liver disease.
- Are on dialysis
- Have narrowing of a heart valve, heart or blood vessel disease.
- Are on a low salt diet.
- Are dehydrated or suffer from excessive vomiting, sweating or diarrhoea.
The antihypertensive medicine can contribute to severe chronic diarrhoea with weight loss. It can take months to years for symptoms to develop. Before performing any activity that may require your complete attention, wait until you know how you respond to this medicine. Lightheadedness, dizziness, or fainting can occur, especially after the initial dose and when the dose is increased. Certain medications may interact with olmesartan, including blood pressure-lowering medicines, such as water pills, lithium used to treat bipolar disorder, or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. Additionally, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to reduce pain and swelling.
General recommended dosage:
For adult patients, the recommended dose is 20 mg once daily. It can be increased to 40 mg by your healthcare provider if your blood pressure is not adequately controlled. Olmecip may be generally administered without regard to food. If a patient does not achieve adequate control by Olmesartan alone, a diuretic may be added to the treatment. If you have forgotten to take a dose of Olmecip during the day, take the next scheduled dose as soon as possible. Do not double up doses.
Side effects of Olmecip 40 mg
Side effects of Olmesartan Olmecip 40 include drowsiness, insomnia, headache, bronchitis, vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, dizziness, upper respiratory tract infection, muscle pain and cramps, back or leg pain. If any of these affects you severely, tell your healthcare provider. Olmecip can cause abnormal blood test results. Your healthcare professional will determine when to perform blood tests and interpret the results.
Instructions to use Olmecip 40 mg include:
Olmesartan Olmecip is an oral antihypertensive agent. Dosage must be individualised and should be prescribed by a healthcare provider. The usual recommended initial dose is 20 mg once daily when used alone in patients who are not volume-contracted. For patients who require additional blood pressure reduction, Omecip 40 mg may be administered under medical supervision.
