Valcivir 1000mg
Valcivir 1000 mg is a widely prescribed antiviral medicine mainly used to treat and manage infections caused by the viruses herpes simplex and varicella-zoster. In people with herpes zoster, Valcivir relieves pain and speeds up the healing of rashes and blisters that develop due to the varicella zoster virus. The medicine effectively treats genital herpes, cold sores, and herpes labialis. It successfully prevents frequent flare-ups by suppressing the virus's activity in individuals who tend to develop repeated infections.
Valcivir 1000mg contains the active ingredient Valacyclovir, which acts by disrupting the replication process of viruses, thus decreasing their ability to multiply inside the body. Valacyclovir is not a cure for shingles or herpes, but it is effective in controlling symptoms, shortening the recovery time, and lowering the risk of associated complications. The antiviral medicine can also be prescribed, particularly to adult patients with chickenpox infections. In some cases, Valacyclovir is given after organ transplantation to prevent cytomegalovirus infection in high-risk patients.
Precautions
Things to remember, allergies, and warnings with the Valcivir 1000mg Valacyclovir tablet
Inform your healthcare specialist if you have liver disease, kidney problems, HIV/AIDs or a history of organ transplantation. Pregnant women should use only if prescribed by a healthcare specialist. While limited evidence suggests minimal risks, the benefits and risks of taking the medicine should be carefully weighed. Drink plenty of water while receiving the antiviral medication to prevent dehydration and kidney function. Valacyclovir is a relatively new antiviral medicine and is not currently approved for immunosuppressed patients, meaning they have advanced HIV disease, kidney disease, or a bone marrow transplant. Older adults may be more susceptible to adverse effects like neurological issues and kidney problems. In such cases, dose adjustment is required.
Let your healthcare provider know about all the medications that you have been using, including over-the-counter products, prescription medicines, herbal products, and supplements. Drugs such as nephrotoxic agents, probenecid, and cimetidine can interact with Valacyclovir 1000mg. The risk of complications associated with viral infection is higher in individuals with a weak immune system and, hence, requires close monitoring.
This antiviral medication does not cure herpes or prevent transmission completely. Patients are advised not to make any sexual contact with their partners during outbreaks and to use an effective contraceptive aid to avoid pregnancy and reduce the risk of transferring the viral infection.
Side effects of the Valcivir 1000mg Valacyclovir tablet
Like all pharmaceutical agents, Valcivir 1000mg may cause side effects, though not everyone who takes this antiviral drug experiences them. Most adverse effects are generally mild and temporary, and do not typically require medical attention. Common side effects associated with the use of Valacyclovir are nausea, headache, dizziness, fatigue, stomach pain, and abdominal discomfort.
Other less common side effects are rash, itching, vomiting, diarrhoea, and sensitivity to sunlight. Rare but serious side effects that require immediate medical help include:
- Neurological effects such as hallucinations, tremors, agitation, confusion, and seizures are more likely to develop in elderly patients.
- Allergic reactions include swelling of the face/lips/tongue/throat, trouble breathing, and severe skin reactions.
- Signs of a kidney disorder include swelling of the feet/ankles, unusual fatigue, and decreased urination.
- Blood-related disorders, such as a reduction in white or red blood cells, ultimately lead to anaemia or increased susceptibility to infections.
How to use Valcivir 1000mg?
Usage methods – Valacyclovir tablet
Depending on the health situation, your healthcare provider may decide the dose of the medicine. It is based on various factors, including body weight, age, sex, and the patient's medical condition.
Generally, Valcivir is taken orally, regardless of whether it is taken with or without food. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, without chewing or crushing it. It is recommended to take the medicine daily at the same time interval. Complete the full treatment course even if your condition improves and your symptoms are completely resolved, unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider.
- For shingles, the usual recommended dose is 1000mg three times a day for a week.
- For genital herpes, typically 1000mg twice a day for ten days.
- For the management of recurrent genital herpes, the dosage ranges from 500mg to 1000mg a day for 3 to 5 days, depending on your condition.
- For treating cold sores (herpes labialis), 2000mg is usually prescribed twice a day. Maintain a 12-hour gap between each dose.
- To prevent recurrence of infection, the usual recommended dose is 500 to 1000mg once a day, particularly in those who experience frequent outbreaks.
Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly. Stopping the medicine suddenly may reverse your improving condition. Keep on taking the tablets until the prescribed amount is finished. Also, do not take this medicine after the prescribed time is over.
