Xtane 25 mg has Exemestane, an aromatase inhibitor, as the main active ingredient known for anti-cancer hormone therapy. Xtane 25mg treat breast cancer at an early stage in postmenopausal women.
Doctors prescribe Xtane 25mg tablet for the treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has reached the next level following Tamoxifen therapy. In other words, Exemestane 25 mg tablets are often given to women whose cancer has progressed even after surgery, radiation, or other cancer medications with no clinical response.
The working mechanism of the Xtane 25 mg tablet
Xtane 25mg medicine is related to the group of medications called aromatase inhibitors. It works by decreasing the production of estrogen in the body, lowering the risk of some breast tumors or breast cancer cells. This drug is prescribed for the adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women. Women with a vitamin D deficiency are advised to take supplements with Xtane during the treatment to respond better.
Precautions with Xtane 25 mg
Do not continue with the Xtane tablet if you are allergic to its active ingredient, Exemestane. Your doctor should know about all medicines you may take for existing health conditions, including supplements, to avoid drug interactions. Xtane can severely interact with other drugs, which can alter the effects of this drug and can cause some unwanted side effects. Such drugs include:
- Estradiol
- Ethinyl Estradiol
- Estrogen (Conjugase, Cornil, Espauz)
- Conjugated estrogens
- Tibolone
- Estriol
- Fosfestrol
- Rifampicin
- Phenobarbitone
- Carbamazepine
- Fosphenytoin
- Phenytoin
- Primidone
- Xtane interaction with alcohol is unknown
Xtane 25mg is not safe if you are pregnant, as it can affect the fetus. Breastfeeding women should also avoid taking this drug because it may cause toxicity to the baby. If you feel dizzy, tired, or sleepy, inform your doctor.
Xtane 25mg uses – This medicine should be taken orally with a glass of water after a meal. Usually, one tablet is recommended each day. Plasma levels of 18 ml are achieved on average within 2 hours of tablet intake.
There is no certain duration of the medication course of the Xtane drug. Your doctor can advise you better on how much to take and for how long. During the clinical trials, a single dose was administered to a healthy woman at doses as high as 800mg, whereas some postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer were given as high as 600mg dose a day for some 12 weeks, and these patients responded well.
If you have missed taking a regular dose of Xtane tablet, do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed one. If the time of the next dose is near, you can skip the missed dose.
Side effects of Xtane 25mg
There are some major and minor possible side effects of Xtane 25mg, and these include:
- Nausea
- Hypersensitivity
- Increased sweating
- Shortness of breath
- Abdominal pain
- Bone and joint pain
- A headache
- Trouble sleeping or insomnia
- Swelling of ankles or feet
- Chest pain
- An elevated level of liver enzymes
- Hot flushes
- Increased sweating
- Mental depression
- Difficult or painful urination
Patients should call a doctor for medical help if these side effects are severe.
