Alzheimer’s disease

About the Disease

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a condition which damages brain cells resulting in memory loss, thinking and language skills, and behavioral changes. It was first described by Alios Alzheimer a German pathologist. It is a sixth leading cause of death in America. Unfortunately there is no way to stop its growth and it keeps on rising with time.

Memory loss is the first sign of disease condition. With advancement in disease there is increase in memory loss and along with that a person will experience mood swings, increased sleeping, seizures, anger, anxiety and overall personality changes.

Exact reason is still unclear but abnormal amount of protein present in brain reduces the activity of nerve cells makes them weak and eventually leads to its destruction. Aged persons are more susceptible to this condition along with that genetic tendency; lifestyle and environmental factors such as heart disorders, stroke, diabetes and obesity are one of the causes of Alzheimer’s disease.

In early stages, it can be diagnosed by simple memory test, personality and behavior changes are observed. For advanced stages Computed topography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are generally done which clearly shows the degenerated status of brain.

There is no effective way to prevent the disease but one can reduce the risk by lowering heart related diseases, regular exercise, eating right and staying mentally and socially active. High intake of supplements pep up the Brain cells and its activity such as

  • Omega fatty acids (Fishes like Tuna, mackerel and Solomon)
  • Eat more vegetables and fruits like Berries
  • Folic acid improves learning and thinking ability
  • Purple grape protects brain cells

This disease is incurable. The basic approach of the treatment is to prevent or delay the signs and symptoms.  There are four USFDA approved drugs which improves the thinking, memory and speaking skills.

  • Donepezil
  • Rivastigmine
  • Galantamine
  • Memantine

Along with these drugs, proper care is a key factor which can make living little easier. A caregiver should try to maintain a healthy lifestyle of a patient by keeping positive environment all around, a proper nutritious diet and making him socially and physically active.

MYTH : Alzheimer’s disease cannot be prevented

FACT: Exact cause of AD is still unknown it could be due to genetic bent or hypertension. There are certain ways which prevents the brain function impairment such as change in lifestyle, proper diet, mental and physical exercise, positive thinking, and stress free life.

MYTH:An x-ray of the brain can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease.

FACT: An x ray cannot diagnose the brain changes. General mental tests, physical examination and techniques like MRI and CT scan can rule out the condition.

Asthma disease

Asthma is a chronic airway inflammatory syndrome in which there is difficulty in the airflow passage that ultimately leads to breathlessness and choking. Tremendous rise in disease have occurred over the past few decades effecting 300 million people worldwide and its prevalence is increasing day by day. About 20 million of the U.S population is suffering from Asthma.

Signs & Symptoms

There are heterogeneous signs and symptoms of ashtma such as recurrent cough, wheezing, chest tightness, difficulty in breathing especially during night and may get worsen with change in season

Asthma  Causes

The complete reason of asthma is still unknown but there are some influential factors which elicits the condition such as genetic factor , gender, various allergens such as pollens, bacterial endotoxins present in house dust mites, cockroaches and molds, tobacco smoke, respiratory infections and chemical irritants . Aspirin and other drugs interaction ,change in season , emotional and physical exercise also triggers the condition.

Preventive measures

There are few steps which can prevent disease such as

  • Taking medicines timely
  • Monitor its signs and symptoms
  • Stay away from allergens such as pollens, smoke and other factors.
  • Physical activity like swimming expands lung volume and improves general fitness
  • Always stay hydrated , drink a lot of coconut water
  • Follow up with your physician after 3 months
  • Take natural supplements like Vitamin C, Omega fatty acids and dry grapes as they fortifies breathing

This  is incurable so the sole purpose of the treatment is to gain hold over the clinical symptoms of the disease. There are long term medicines such as corticosteroids, long term beta agonist, leukotrienes which prevents disease symptoms. On other side Quick relief drugs such as Albuterol, levabuterol short acting beta agonist can be considered as life saving or emergency drug as it provides rapid relief and is generally available in the form of inhalers or nebulizers. This therapeutic regimen reduces the signs and symptoms, and decreases the incidence of death ,therefore improves the quality of life.

Myths & Facts

Myth: People with asthma cannot play sports

Fact :No, people can play sports by keeping good control over their asthma. Activities like swimming and slow warm up and cool down periods with exercise helps them to control  work out induced asthmatic conditions.

Myth:Asthma symptoms are the same for everyone.

Fact: No, It  differs from person to person. One may encounter chest tightness while someone else may only cough. So one should analyse the symptoms and take the preventive measures accordingly.

Cancer is a condition in which there is uncontrolled division of cells.  Cells keep on multiplying to form tumors which further interfere with normal functioning of body. There are two types of tumors one is benign which lacks the power of penetration and other one is malignant which spreads to other parts of body and destroys other healthy tissues.

Signs and symptoms

Typical symptoms are unusual bleeding or discharge, formation of unusual lumps, nagging cough, indigestion, and persistent headache. A person may feel chronic pain in bones, consistent fatigue, nausea, unexplained body loss

There is no exact underlying cause of the disease. There are 200 types of Cancer each of them is having specific root cause. There are certain factors which increase the person’s susceptibility towards the disease.

ED pills reported to treat non ED problems

Such is an embarrassing situation when you want to live your sex life but are not able to attain or sustain an erection of penis suffice for intercourse; difficulty of penetration is making your sex life awkward. Here your penis is victimized by erectile dysfunction. Erectile dysfunction is symbolized by a flex penis. A recent study discloses that erectile dysfunction is common. Its overall prevalence in men aged below 20 years is 18.4% revealing erectile dysfunction affects 18 million men in the US. Any organ works when brain orders to do so however when brain stops sending signals to that organ, the organ becomes dysfunctional. Same applies to penis, when brain does not send signal to nerves of penis to trigger the erection, erectile dysfunction occurs. Over the years there have been various medicinal and alternative treatments available to treat erectile dysfunction. Three wonder drugs i.e. Sildenafil, Tadalafil and Vardenafil which shows erection when needed are used to treat erectile dysfunction. These drugs are collectively known as Phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors. ED is also treated by male enhancement supplements that prolong the attainment of erection during intercourse.

What is Pulmonary Hypertension?

Pulmonary hypertension begins when the arteries that carries blood from the lungs to heart are blocked, narrowed, or constricted obstructing the blood flow from your heart and through your lungs. In turn, heart overworks harder to push blood beyond the blockages resulting in this increased blood pressure in the arteries and the heart. Over time, the heart gets exhausted and heart muscles are weakened because of the overburdening with the work it has to do to compensate. This condition can also lead to heart failure and eventual death..

Pulmonary Hypertension treatment with your Erectile Dysfunction pill

The complications of the disease can be slow down and prevented by treatment. The recent studies have shown that pulmonary hypertension can be treated with the drugs prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction. The most used and most studied in market is sildenafil. It has been proved more useful for treating erectile dysfunction. But a surprising fact is that Sildenafil Citrate is also used for treating uncommon but serious disorder of high pressure in the pulmonary blood vessels (blood vessels carrying oxygen rich blood to the heart through the lungs).

Sildenafil Citrate has evolved from a potential anti-angina drug to a recent new orally active treatment for pulmonary hypertension. Sildenafil Citrate acts by dilating the blood vessels in the lungs hence increasing the blood flow, which can elevate oxygen levels in the blood. For some people, these erectile dysfunction medicines may help relieve symptoms of pulmonary hypertension.

Sildenafil is not suitable for everyone

Some people should never use it or use with special care. People who have a medical condition which could be affected by the vasodilating effect should avoid sildenafil. There is a high possibility that over the time sildenafil can become unsuitable for some people so if at any time side effects or any uncomfortable situation is visible by using sildenafil, the drug intake should be discontinued immediately and doctor to be contacted.

Sildenafil Citrate 100mg serves the dual purpose of treating the erectile dysfunction as well as the pulmonary hypertension. A person affected by both the diseases can maximize the benefit by taking just one drug. However the person having penile problems such as a deformed penis, Peyronie’s disease or penile scarring should not use this medicine. Similarly people who have recently had a heart attack are advised not to use sildenafil. Over the last two decades, a huge progress has been made in the treatment of patients suffering with pulmonary hypertension. One such innovation is oral therapies for pulmonary hypertension. Sildenafil 100mg has emerged as an effective oral treatment for decreasing the proportion of the sickness in pulmonary hypertension disease. Patients with symptoms of pulmonary hypertension who do not have indications for treatment with intravenous drugs are specially benefited by oral sildenafil.

Sildenafil Citrate has been promised as a useful therapy in numerous cases of pulmonary hypertension caused of various reasons and has so far played a salutary role in the clinical treatment of pulmonary hypertension, but further study is required as on the safety of this drug. Clarification of the role of sildenafil in treating pulmonary hypertension requires a well-designed trial cases.

Treating Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Treating Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration is also called age related macular degeneration (AMD), it is found to be the leading cause of vision loss in America. It’s been known that millions of Americans shows sign of this disorder. If you are younger than 55, then there are less chances to develop AMD but on the other hand if you are 65 or over then macular degeneration would already affect your central vision (vision needed for woks like reading or sewing). Macula is a tiny circle located in the middle of the retina, a light sensitive membrane lining the inside of back of the eye. In older people it begins to deteriorate or sometimes degenerate without any reason.

Women are at higher risk to develop AMD than men and the problem leaves totally unable to see.  Doctors usually are not sure that what exactly causes a macular degeneration but there are certain risk factors for the same which includes: family history, cigarette smoking and high fat diet.

There are two types of macular degeneration

  • Dry macular degeneration– In this type of macular degeneration, 90% of cases fall under this category. The tissue of the retina shrinks and the pigments gets accumulated inside it, whereas dry macular degeneration may progress to the wet form
  • Wet macular degeneration– This is second type of AMD in which the new blood vessels grow around and somewhere behind the macula. Sometimes bleeding could also be seen in or behind the macula. Exudates are the material that settles into macula. Gradually exudates start disappearing but it leaves a scar. 10% of the cases fall under this category and wet macular degeneration only occurs when a person already had dry macular degeneration.

Symptoms of macular degeneration

Macular degeneration develops gradually. It is a painless condition or disease so sometimes its early symptoms could be mistaken for normal age related changes in vision. As per Mayo clinic, some of the symptoms of AMD are given below:

  • Objects start appearing small or far off
  • Difficulty increases to adapt to low light levels
  • Decreasing colour intensity and brightness
  • Difficulty in recognising faces
  • Doorways seeming crooked
  • Increasing vision haziness
  • Blur or blind spots in central vision

If any of the symptoms occur, it is recommended that one must visit an eye specialist or ophthalmologist immediately.

Ophthalmologist would examine you and do an eye exam to know about macular degeneration from the description of symptoms. An eye test would involve examining the retina visually. He would first look in to the eye and then put some eye drops for dilating the pupils. Occurrence of tiny yellow flecks known as drusen is a sign of AMD. In few cases drusen occurs without AMD, whereas if one increase amounts of this material then it will foretell problems to come. AMD can be detected with a test named as an Amsler grid which a poster showing vertical and horizontal lines and there is a dot in the centre.

Macular degeneration treatment

If a person has advanced or severe dry macular degeneration, then there is no treatment to cure the disease or to restore vision. If the case is of early AMD and person do not even smoke, then there are some combinations of vitamins, antioxidants and minerals that could largely help to prevent the disease   from worsening. The combination has been named as AREDS formula and the supplements are:

  • 500 milligrams of vitamin C
  • 400 international units of beta-carotene
  • 80 milligrams of zinc
  • 2 milligrams of copper

These supplements are to be taken only after doctor’s recommendation. Smokers should avoid these pills. Lutein and zeaxanthin are some other supplements which could be helpful but are not part of AREDS formula. In case of wet macular degeneration, the doctor would prescribe

  • Laser therapy in which a small beam of light would destroy the leaking and some abnormal blood vessels.
  • In photodynamic therapy, what happens is a light activate a drug which gets injected into the body and destroys leaking blood vessels.
  • There are some special medicines which are designed to prevent new blood vessels from forming in the eye.

Always take care of your eyes and follow preventive measures to prevent future eye problems. In case of dry macular degeneration, always visit your eye specialist once in a year and get complete eye exam.  Whereas for wet macular degeneration, frequent and monthly doctor visits are required.

Finding even a slight change in the vision should be immediately treated because the sooner you get treatment, the better is the outcome. In order to reduce the risk of getting macular degeneration, keep exercising, quit smoking, follow healthy diet and maintain a healthy weight. In this way you could help yourself getting a perfect vision forever.

How to Prevent High Cholesterol?

Prevent High Cholesterol

These days a number of people suffer from cardiovascular diseases such as heart diseases or stroke; the major reason found behind every heart problem is High cholesterol. Too much cholesterol in the blood can actually be serious whereas high blood cholesterol itself would not cause any symptoms so people remain quite unaware when their high cholesterol level gets high. It’s been known that about 71 million American people have high cholesterol level from which hardly 1 out of 3 adults has the condition under control.

If I have to define cholesterol, then in simple words I would say it is a waxy or a fat like substance that is found in all cells of the body. Cholesterol is a need of our body to make hormones, vitamin D and substances that let us digest foods. It can be found in the foods that we usually eat. Cholesterol travels through the bloodstream and is carried in small packages known as lipoproteins. These small packages are largely made up of fat i.e. lipid on inside and proteins on outside. The two kinds of lipoproteins that carry the cholesterol throughout the body are given below. It is important that one maintain healthy levels of both:

  • LDL or Low density lipoprotein– Sometimes known as bad cholesterol. The high LDL cholesterol may lead to build up of cholesterol in our arteries. The higher is the LDL level in blood, the more is the chance of getting heart diseases.
  • HDL or High density lipoprotein– Sometimes known as good cholesterol. HDL is responsible to carry cholesterol from other body parts back to the liver. The liver tends to remove cholesterol from the body. The higher the HDL cholesterol level, lower is the chance of developing any heart diseases.

Another type of lipid that comes from the fat in the food is Triglycerides. The energy that comes from the food if does not get used up immediately gets converted into triglycerides and transports to the fat cells for storage. In this way it provides us with an important source of stored energy. Also most of the triglycerides are stored as a fat, and the low levels are found in the blood. Raised level of blood triglycerides along with high LDL may enhance the risk of heart diseases especially in that case if you already suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure.

What causes high cholesterol?

There could be certain factors which may contribute to you having high cholesterol level. Given below are some:

  • Eating a diet rich in saturated fats may increase cholesterol level
  • Being physically inactive or lack of exercise
  • Being obese or having a body mass index of 30 or more
  • Consuming liquor more than the recommended daily amount can increase the level of triglycerides in the blood
  • Those who smoke
  • The cholesterol level starts rising with an increase in age and can get affected by gender. A man younger than 55, could have high cholesterol than any woman. On the other hand if you are a woman over 55 and past the menopause, then your cholesterol level may slightly increase

Genes also plays a major factor in development of high cholesterol; so it may be caused by a condition that may run in the family called hypercholesterolaemia (FH). Uncontrolled diabetes, certain kidney or liver diseases are some other conditions which may cause the level of cholesterol or triglycerides to be high.

Treatment for high cholesterol

Now in order to get rid of high cholesterol, what utmost important is to follow healthy lifestyle? Proper exercising and eating a healthy balanced diet are the first line of defence against the high cholesterol. If you get successful in doing this, then the cholesterol level will remain in control.  But if the cholesterol level still gets high, then doctor may prescribe some medications. The common medications include

  • Statins– The choices are: Atorvastatin, Fluvastatin, Lovastatin and Pravastatin
  • Bile-acid-binding resins- The medications Cholestyramine (Prevalite), Colesevelam (Welchol) and Colestipol (Colestid)
  • Cholesterol absorption inhibitors- The medication Ezetimibe (Zetia) helps to reduce blood cholesterol by limiting the absorption of dietary cholesterol. Zetia can also be used in combination with statin drugs.
  • Combination cholesterol absorption inhibitor and statin- The combination drug ezetimibe-simvastatin (Vytorin) is effective to decrease both absorption of dietary cholesterol in the small intestine and production of cholesterol in the liver.

How to get rid of high cholesterol?

Diet to be followed should be low in saturated fats and low in fat overall. One must cut down food items like biscuits, cakes, pastries, red meat and butter because they tend to be quite high in saturated fats.

Foods that must be added as part of daily routine and to keep cholesterol level in check are mentioned below:

  • Avocados– They are found to contain a substantial amount of good fats and fibre that largely helps to boost good cholesterol and lower bad one.
  • Barley– It is a great food item known to lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides level. As per the study, the cholesterol lowering effect is caused due to beta glucan that is a type of fibre present in barley. Further it has shown to reduce cholesterol level ranging from 4-10% depending on how much barley one consumes.
  • Brown rice– Brown rice is an excellent food for health. The nutrients present are: B vitamins, selenium, phytonutrients and magnesium. Having a cup of brown rice may provide about 14% of daily recommended value for fibre. High fibre is good to lower blood sugar and controls cholesterol.
  • Broccoli- This is another food item which is good and have cholesterol lowering properties. Try to have steamed broccoli in place of raw broccoli to lower cholesterol level.
  • Cinnamon– Half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day could reduce blood sugar, triglycerides and bad cholesterol. You can have it by adding in to your green tea or use it in food to add some flavours.
  • Cluster beans– Being rich in dietary fibre, the food is good in lowering cholesterol levels.
  • Fenugreek seeds– If you consume fenugreek seeds on regular basis, then you could definitely see some improvement in LDL or triglyceride level in the blood. Also fenugreek seeds have shown to control the blood sugar level in people suffering from diabetes.
  • Fatty fish– Salmon, tuna, mackerel and sardines are a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and proteins. As per the scientific evidence, consuming fish rich in fatty acids helps to reduce triglyceride level by 25-30 percent, further it increases HDL level and also reduces the risk of heart problems. As recommended by AHA, eat two servings of fatty fish every week to get its maximum health benefits.
  • Green tea– Green tea contains catechin polyphenols which are good for heart health. Those who drink green tea daily are able to lower their total and LDL cholesterol and has no effects on HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. It’s a drink of zero calories when taken without sugar, so is quite good for people who watch their weight.

Apart from eating healthy food, you must do proper exercise to remain fit and to lose some weight. Excess weight too contributes to high cholesterol, so losing 5 to 10 pounds can greatly help to lower total cholesterol level.

So make sure that you quit smoking, stop drinking alcohol and always follow heart healthy lifestyle to prevent high cholesterol and to live a disease free life ever.

In that case, to prevent unwanted pregnancy a woman has to take oral emergency contraceptive pills after sexual act. This becomes an important option for every woman to live a tension free life ever.  There are various methods to prevent unwanted pregnancy. Main 12 types of birth control are given below:

  • Combination pills
  • Progestin- only pill
  • Extended cycle pill
  • Vaginal ring
  • Diaphragm
  • IUD
  • Female condom
  • Male condom
  • Patch
  • Implant
  • Sterilization
  • Emergency contraception

The oral contraceptive pill is the easiest way a woman could opt for. The pill provides much effective results. Before we go on to discuss about female oral contraceptives, let us first have a brief idea about when did birth control pills first originated?

Brief history of oral pills

Long back many couples tried several methods to prevent pregnancy. Prior to modern methods for birth control, woman depended on withdrawal or periodic abstinence which often failed. In the year 1916, Margaret Sanger (American birth control activist, sex educator, and nurse) opened her first birth control clinic in Unites States and the other year she had to go jail for thirty days on account of maintaining public nuisance. Officially in the year 1960, the very first oral contraceptive Enovid, got approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as contraception. Also in the year 1972, Supreme Court took a stand and legalized birth control for all the citizens of United States irrespective of their marital status.

What are oral contraceptives?

The oral contraceptive pills are commonly birth control pills to be used by woman for preventing pregnancy, or to regulate the menstrual cycle and to provide hormone replacement therapy. There are two main types of female oral birth control pills which are the progestin-only pill and combined oral contraceptive pills. Combined birth control pills contains estrogen and progesterone which tend to work mainly by stopping ovulation meaning if there isn’t any egg to meet the sperm how will the pregnancy occur? The reversible effect on the uterine lining and cervical mucus also discourages pregnancy.

How it works?

  • The pill works in three ways, first it try to change the body’s hormone balance so that ovaries do not produce an egg or ovulate.
  • Also it causes the mucus to thicken and form a mucous plug which makes it difficult for sperm to pass through uterus for fertilisation.
  • The pill is also effective in making the lining of womb thinner. So the chances are less that a fertilised egg will attach to the uterus.

Be it over the counter emergency contraceptive pills or any other birth control method, their main aim is to prevent unwanted pregnancy and most of the results are successful.

The oral female contraceptives prove efficient under ideal conditions giving success rate of over 99.5%. One could experience several other benefits of these pills which are mentioned below:

Oral pills other health benefits

  • Birth control pills are found to be highly reliable and provide successful results exceeding over 99%.
  • Using contraceptive oral pills may cause menstrual cycle to occur regularly and predictably. This is good for those women whose periods come too often or infrequently.
  • Having painful menstrual cramps may get some relief from using birth control pills.
  • They tend to reduce the amount of blood flow during periods which means less blood loss will prevent anemia.
  • The risk of developing ovarian cysts can be reduced for those using birth control pills, as they help prevent ovulation.
  • If any medication does not work on your acne, then having birth control pills may cure moderate to severe acne. The hormones in the birth control pills can greatly help acne from forming.
  • These pills can also reduce the risk of symptomatic endometriosis. The women who have endometriosis can feel less pelvic pain if they are on the pill. The disease would not be cured but yes the pills may help to stop further progression.
  • Excessive facial or body hair can be improved while taking the pills as androgens and testosterone may get suppressed by oral female contraceptives.

One should know that these pills do not provide any protection from sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) like HIV. Also taking these pills will never affect a woman’s future fertility although it could take about two or three month longer if somehow a woman stops taking them.

How to start combination pills?

Oral contraceptive pills comes in packets of 21, 28 or 91 tablets to be taken through mouth once a day, every day and almost each day of regular cycle. Always consult your doctor before taking these medicines and read directions to use on prescription label carefully. Take it exactly as prescribed. They come in many different brands which contains different medications or doses to be taken in different way. Make sure you know which brand you are using and how to use it.

  • For 21 packet tablet, have single tablet daily for 21 days and then none for a week or 7 days. After it start a new packet
  • For 28 tablet packet, have 1 tablet daily for 28 days in a row as specified in the packet. Start new packet on the day after you have 28th The tablets are of different colours and many colour tablets contain different amounts of estrogen and progestin. There are certain colour tablets too which have an active ingredient or a folate supplement
  • For 91 day tablet packet, have one tablet daily for 91 days and the packet would consist of three trays of tablets. You can start with the first tablet on first tray and then can continue with taking 1 tablet each day as specified on the packet until you have taken all tablets on all three trays.

Your pharmacist or doctor would tell you when you should start taking contraceptive pills. Also these pills are started on the first or fifth day of the menstrual period or on the first Sunday after when the bleeding begins. Doctor would also tell whether you require any other method of birth control during the first 7 to 9 days of taking oral contraceptive.

Possible side effects

Combination birth pills are safe for mostly women but sometimes they are associated with small increased risk of vein thrombosis (blood clot), heart attack or stroke. The risk is comparatively higher in those women who are 35 years old and smoke about 15 cigarettes in a day. Also risk increases for those having multiple risk factors for cardiovascular diseases like high cholesterol or high blood pressure and diabetes.

One should immediately consult a doctor in case any of the symptoms occur like extreme headache, bad pain in chest, in legs or tummy, difficulty in breathing, coughing up blood and weakness or numbness in the arms or leg. These symptoms could be due to blood clot.

In case of any discrepancy, try to visit your nearest gynaecologist as soon as possible and always make sure that you read the prescription thoroughly before consuming any oral contraceptive.

Prostate cancer is the cancer of a man’s prostate, which is a gland of the male reproductive system that helps in nourishing and transporting sperm. Generally, the development of this condition is a slow process, but some grows fast. During the initial stages, prostate cancer doesn’t cause any symptoms, but when prostate cancer begins to grow quickly and starts spreading outside the prostate, and then the condition may be dangerous.

It has been studied by the researchers that men with prostate cancer don’t know that they have the disease because of no symptoms until it is in an advanced stage. Various men who die with prostate cancer mainly die of other causes like heart disease. But, if prostate cancer is diagnosed in its early stages, then the chances of survival becomes higher. Reports have stated that about 85% of American men with prostate cancer get diagnosed with early stage of the disease.:

The cause for prostate cancer is unknown, but doctors say that prostate cancer begins when cells in your prostate become abnormal. It means that the mutations in abnormal cells cause the cells to grow and divide unnaturally. These abnormal cells are at the initial stage, if they are present only in the prostate, but when these abnormal cells form a tumor and grow to invade nearby tissue then the risk increases.

Who are at risk of developing prostate cancer?

There are certain risk factors that may predispose a person to prostate cancer. These are as follows:

  • Age- Age plays an important role in the development of prostate cancer. It is a fact that more than 60% of cases of prostate cancer arise in men over 65 years of age, whereas the illness is rare in men under the age of 40 years.
  • Race or ethnicity- As compared to Asian and Hispanic men, African-American men are at increased risk of diagnosing with prostate cancer.
  • Family history- Men are at risk of developing prostate cancer, if the disease has existed in their families. For example, if the first degree relation like a father or brother has or had prostate cancer, then the man is at risk of this disease.
  • Nationality- Reports have proved that prostate cancer is more common in North America, northwestern countries in Europe, and the Caribbean as compared to the Asian, and South and Central Americans. Factors like diet and lifestyle, may account for this condition.

Signs and symptoms of prostate cancer in men:

In early stages it has been found that prostate cancer may not cause signs and symptoms, but in the advanced stages prostate cancer may cause symptoms in men. Below are some of the common signs and symptoms of prostate cancer in men:

  • Urge to urinate
  • Finding trouble in urinating
  • Constant urination
  • Pain during urination and ejaculation
  • Amount of blood in the urine or semen
  • Shortness of breath
  • Increased heartbeat

These are few signs and symptoms of the condition, but you have to rush to the nearest hospital whenever you experience deep bone pain, in the back, hips, or thighs because these may be the alarming situation and the possible signs of advanced prostate cancer that has spread to the bones. Moreover, delaying your trip to the hospital after experiencing any of the above mentioned signs and symptoms of prostate cancer then it may result in damaging your spinal cord permanently.

To diagnose the condition of prostate cancer, your doctor may perform various tests including digital rectal exams (DRE), prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, transrectal ultrasound, biopsy, and transrectal biopsy. After determining the presence of cancer through these tests and processes, the next step is staging them. Staging is done after studying the tissue samples and cancer cells with the healthy prostate cells. As per the aggression of the cells they are staged, accordingly.

Generally, staging the prostate cancer involves four stages. The initial stage signifies the early cancer, which means that the small area of the prostate is affected, whereas the later stages are considered complicated because here the cells are much more aggressive as compared to the early stages. After staging the cancer, your doctor may check your overall health to determine that your body will respond to the treatment or not. If your doctor finds your condition suitable for treatment, then he/she may perform the following options:

Surgery is the initial treatment of prostate cancer, which may be performed only when the tumor is in the prostate gland. Basically, it helps in removing the tumor from the prostates. The following treatment of prostate cancer includes:

  • Retropubic prostatectomy- Operation is performed by the surgeon who removes the nearby lymph nodes. Retropubic prostatectomy surgery helps in preventing the spread of disease.
  • Perineal prostatectomy– This surgery removes the lymph nodes and the surgeon makes an incision in the perineum, which is the area between scrotum and anus.

Radiation therapy:

Radiation therapy is another treatment option of prostate cancer where high-powered energy kills cancer cells by delivering the radiation to the prostates. Frequent, painful, and urgent urination are some of the side effects of this treatment. Moreover, side effects may also include rectal symptoms like loose stools or pain when passing stools.

Hormone therapy:

Hormone therapy is the treatment option of prostate cancer, where surgeon stops the body from producing male hormone, testosterone. During this therapy, the doctor cut off the hormones supply, which causes cancer cells to die or to grow slowly. Common side effects of this treatment include erectile dysfunction, low libido, loss of bone mass, and weight gain.

Chemotherapy uses any one or combination of cancer-fighting drugs. This therapy is recommended by the doctor in cases of advanced prostate cancer that has not responded to hormone treatment. Basically, chemotherapy process kills the growing cancer cells rapidly. Some of the common side-effects of chemotherapy include hair loss, loss of appetite, infertility (a permanent side effect), nausea and vomiting.

Side effects like nausea and vomiting can be controlled by some medications, although it may take some time. Generally, side effects of chemotherapy will go away when the treatment stops.

You may follow various tips that may reduce your risk of prostate cancer. These are mentioned below:

  • Diet factors- Healthy eating is recommended by the doctors to lead a perfect life. Eating a healthy diet can lower the risk of certain cancers. Lycopene may be found in tomatoes and tomato based foods, whereas     selenium is a natural chemical that can be found in plant foods like vegetables, fish, Brewer’s yeast, some meats, grains, shellfish, eggs, and wheat germ.
