Misoprostol 200 mcg tablet is a prescription drug widely used for medical abortion (termination of a pregnancy) and to prevent post-delivery bleeding. Misoprostol 200 mcg tablet is related to a group of medicines known as ‘Abortifacient’ and ‘Antiulcer agents’, which are often combined with mifepristone to terminate a pregnancy. This medicine is also effectively used to treat gastric or stomach ulcers and reduce the risk of ulcer complications like stomachache and bleeding.

How does Misoprostol Works?

Misoprostol 200 mcg can effectively block the natural female hormone progesterone, responsible for conceiving or successful pregnancy. This prescription drug can increase contractions of the womb (uterus) and dilate the cervix to cause abortion or expel the pregnancy. Misoprostol 200 mcg tablet can also prevent post-delivery bleeding that happens due to low contraction of the uterus. This medicine is widely recommended to treat gastric ulcers in older adults and prescribe NSAID (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, including aspirin) therapy. The combination of Misoprostol and Diclofenac works as a pain reliever as it can suppress the production of chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause redness and swelling due to inflammation. It does not render any side effects that cause gastrointestinal pain or discomfort associated with NSAID treatment.

Available dosages of Misoprostol Tablets:

Adult and pediatric dosages of Misoprostol tablets are 100 mcg and 200 mcg. Dosage considerations should be followed as prescribed by your doctor. Usually, 200 mcg is prescribed for adults; for avoiding the possibility of diarrhea and vomiting, dosing may be started with 100 mcg.

Side Effects of Misoprostol 200 mcg Tablets

There are some common as well as rare side effects of Misoprostol 200 mcg such as:

  • Muscle pain and cramps
  • Uterine contractions
  • Uterine bleeding and heavy bleeding
  • Fetal malformations

Misoprostol 200 can be taken alone or combined with other medicines to attain optimum benefits, as prescribed by the health experts. It should be taken after taking a meal. The tablet can be taken orally, and you can swallow it with a little amount of water. Do not chew or crush the tablet before taking it. This medicine is not prescribed for patients with previous cesarean delivery or major uterine surgery.

If you experience vomiting or nausea within 30 minutes after taking this medicine, inform your doctor or take precautions. The effects of this are usually experienced after 24 hours of intake.


It is advised to inform your doctor before taking the Misoprostol tablet. Tell your doctor if you have ever gone through an ectopic pregnancy. Those women who are breastfeeding must consult a health expert before consuming this medicine. This medicine should be avoided during pregnancy as it can be harmful and affect the development of the baby in the womb. Misoprostol 200 Tablet may decrease alertness and affect your vision, so avoid driving in such a case. Do not consume alcohol or any other illicit material during the medication course.

What if you have missed a dosage?

If you have missed a dose of Misoprostol 200 mcg Tablet, the result may not be as per your expectations, and the termination of pregnancy may not be fully effective. It is advised to talk to your doctor in the case of missed dosage.
