Latest statistics show that nearly 17 million people in the US have asthma, which is 2.5 million more people than the past five years. Causes of asthma can be identified and the condition can be treated with several medical solutions. However, there are natural alternatives too. Home remedies can be combined with asthma medications to help people with asthma to manage their condition.

Home Remedies to Alleviate Asthma Symptoms

Coffee: Caffeine is helpful for controlling and preventing asthma episodes as it has bronchodilatory properties. Three cups a day is the maximum recommended limit. Also, children with asthma shouldn’t drink coffee.

Onions: Onions have anti-inflammatory effects that ease up the airways in the event of an asthma attack. So eating cooked onions is a good thing for asthma prevention.

Chili peppers: Hot foods are known to ease up the airways. Hot peppers have capsaicin that has anti-inflammatory properties. Peppers trigger fluids in the lungs, throat and mouth, thinning out mucus and making it easier for a person to breathe during an attack.

Orange juice: People with asthma suffer from a deficiency of vitamin C. A daily intake of 300mg of vitamin C can reduce wheezing by 30%. This dose can be achieved by drinking three glasses of orange juice a day. Other vitamin C-rich foods for asthma prevention include blueberries, strawberries, red bell pepper, broccoli, and papaya.

Salmon: Any food rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, and sardines help lungs. It is great for asthma prevention in people who have never suffered an attack. It also improves the lungs’ ability to deal with irritants.

Yogurt: When taken with asthma medications, the Vitamin B12 present in yogurt can provide relief from asthma symptoms. It is especially great for people who are sensitive to sulfite. The recommended dose for asthma prevention is 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12 for adults. One cup yogurt has 1.4 micrograms of vitamin B12.

Cheesecloth: To form a dust filter in your house, use cheesecloth as a covering for all the heat outlets. It will catch pollen, animal dander and dust, preventing it from circulating in the air in your room. Last but not the least, cleaning the house thoroughly goes a long way in helping asthma patients.

Peppermint extract: If you want to make a vaporizer at home, here’s a technique. Take 1 quart non-chlorinated water and put it in a pan made of glass, steel or enamel. Put the pan on the stove and add ten drops of peppermint oil or extract before bringing it to a boil. Wait for all the water to go out by letting it simmer for around an hour. The oil will saturate the air around.

So, these were some effective home remedies for asthma prevention. Besides these, there are some things to avoid if you want asthma diagnosis and treatment. Firstly, watch your salt intake. Having too much salt makes you very susceptible to attacks because the airways become sensitive to triggers. Secondly, avoid animal products such as cow’s milk as that can help in getting rid of food allergens. You can work out a healthy vegan diet with your nutritionist.
